The BlackBerry Is Mightier Than The Pen!

black.jpg.display[1]

This article caught my eye and I had to share it with you. Europe is usually ahead of us with phones, medication, and laws such as the bluetooth. This one is about the police and their paperwork. It comes down to this: If the pen is mightier than the sword, then the BlackBerry must be mightier than both!

The Press Associated announced that police will soon be spending less time on paperwork in the office and more time out on duty in the streets. It appears more than 600 South Yorkshire police are going to be handed a BlackBerry. The BlackBerry smartphones are going to contain an app developed by Vodaphone and Airpoint which will give them the ability to access records on the go.

The app imports data straight from the Police National Computer, cutting down on paperwork time as they will be able to access police records, identify people, vehicles and locations in real-time. They will also be able to enter details of “Stop and Account” where an individual is stopped but not searched. This will hopefully solve the 855  days spent last year in office paperwork and put those days back to duty, since those days were due to administration demands and correcting mistakes.

The officers can look forward to their new BlackBerry smartphones in October. Wonder when our police tasks force will go to a BlackBerry. It would be interesting: Armed with BlackBerry.

What are your thoughts about this? Think it would be a good move or bad move? I’m aware some parts of Alaska already use them, but here’s something interesting. There have been stories of policemen hitting a car in front because they were checking their personal BlackBerry, but what will happen when they are officially passed one as a work related device? I guess only time will tell.

Get Your BlackBerry buzzd, Free App Tells You Where The Happening Spots Are

buzzdid

There’s a new beta application available for the BlackBerry. It’s called buzzd. Now you might be wondering what all the buzz is about, so let me share with you. Before the application for the BlackBerry, it was only accessible online on it’s website or from a mobile browser. The program lets you know what events and concerts (50,000 events a month from Canada, the UK and US) are happening in the location you seek, and where to find food and drinks. The information comes from trusted sources and real time reviews from the buzzd community. It is the first application from the BlackBerry AppWorld to use Cell ID, which can be faster than GPS and it can be used in buildings, including clubs. This app is a direct result of the BlackBerry Partners Fund, and has the potential to be the leading location finder from BlackBerry AppWorld.

So let me tell you what makes it unique. The Cell ID is impressive, and hopefully we will see more of this type of location finder in other apps because while GPS is blocked by some providers or there may not be any GPS signal, Cell ID will work as long as there’s reception because it works with the cell sites. It receives its listings from over 20 content providers such as Citysearch, Last.fm, ZAGAT, and Flavorpill among others. It has a smooth UI and integrates with Twitter so you can broadcast to your tweeps where you are and what you’re doing. All the content Buzzd provides is free, unlike ZAGAT that has one source and runs $20.00. You send invites and get your friends to join. You can post a buzz, which a text to your friends. You can add events to your BlackBerry Calendar, and it integrates with your maps to allow you to find directions and locate the destinations (1.5 million venues available throughout Canada, the UK and US). You can also share your pics and reviews with your buzzd community.

If you would like to download Buzzd to your BlackBerry and give it a try, you can go to the BlackBerry AppWorld or to the buzzd website. If you do it from the website you can register, use your Facebook to log in, and create an account and have the application texted to your phone. Install from the link texted and you’re good to go.

If you decide to get buzzd, please leave us a comment and let us know what you think!

The app works with OS 4.2 and higher, and is compatible with the BlackBerry smartphones with those OS including the Pearl, the Curve, the Bold, and the Storm.
