RIM Launches BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac Users

New software makes it easy to sync data between Mac applications and BlackBerry smartphones; free download scheduled to be available on October 2

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Sept. 30, 2009) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) has exciting news for Mac(R) users that want an easy and reliable solution that syncs their contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes with their BlackBerry(R) smartphones. A new version of the BlackBerry(R) Desktop Manager software has been developed specifically for Mac users. The new desktop software is scheduled to be available for free download from www.blackberry.com/mac on Friday, October 2 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The new BlackBerry Desktop Manager software allows Mac users to smoothly and seamlessly sync data from Mac applications like iCal(R), Address Book, Microsoft(R) Entourage(R) and others, as well as add and remove applications, schedule automatic backups, encrypt backup files and install software updates for their BlackBerry smartphone.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software also integrates BlackBerry Media Sync, enabling Mac users to sync their iTunes(R) music collections with their BlackBerry smartphone(i). From within the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, users simply select the desired iTunes playlists and the music, including song information and album art, is quickly transferred onto their BlackBerry smartphone.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager software is designed to run on Mac computers with Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher and supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher.

We thought it was coming last week, but now Boy Genius got the word that BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac might be launching on September 25th. In case you missed all the leaks, you might be able to still find them. Desktop Manager for Mac allows you to sync your BlackBerry data, do backup/restores, as well Sync iTunes, and perform BlackBerry software updates. So with any luck at all this isn’t just a rumor and we will see it very soon…

Not too long after being leaked on to the internet, Word has come from @BlackBerry on Twitter that Desktop Manager for Mac “might” now be available! Finally Mac users will no longer have to use useless applications like Pocket Mac to sync their BlackBerry. The new Desktop Manager for Mac from RIM also will allow software updates, installation and removal of apps, iTunes Sync, and lots more. As I am writing this post the download link isn’t available on RIM’s website, but it should be there sometime today…

Update: Seems that RIM has removed the Tweet and Facebook note… Not sure what to believe now. Stay tuned until we hear more.

Seems noting is really safe with RIM these days. Here is a leaked copy of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0, which might come in handy if you planning on installing those leaked copies of OS 5.0 for the Bold and Curve 8900. Anyways just be aware that this may not be the most stable version available yet as it is still in beta testing but it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot. Any luck at all we will see RIM release this early next month at WES with OS 5.0. Stay tuned!

4. Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

Connect your device to your computer. Open the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. Click Application Loader. Click Start in Add/Remove Applications or Update Applications. If necessary, perform the following actions: If the Device Security Password dialog box appears, type your device password. Click Next. If the Communication Port Selection dialog box appears, specify a communications port. Click Next. Click Next. Perform any of the following actions: To add an application that appears in the list, select the check box beside the application. To add an application that does not appear in the list, click Browse. Double-click an application loader (.alx or .ali) file. Click Next.

9. Click Finish.

10. Congratulations, your BlackBerry unlock is done for free! You can now replace your SIM and memory card and set up your phone the way you like it.

With the release of the BlackBerry Storm in the UK and coming up in North America very soon. RIM has released version 4.7 of BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC. You have the option to download this software with or without the media manager as well. You can grab a copy of the new Desktop Manager right here from RIM directly.

I have to say that if this is true I really hope RIM brings out their own version of DTM as I’m sick of dual-booting my Mac just to do backups and OS upgrades.
