Bell has officially rolled out their new HSPA network across Canada, and with that launch came two new BlackBerry smartphones. Bell has launched the classic BlackBerry Bold 9000, as well the new Bold 9700. Both should be available in stores starting today. Pricing starts $249 with three year term for the Bold 9000, and $229 with three year term for the Bold 9700. Something seems a little odd with the Bold 9000 pricing, as its listed higher than the new Bold. Stay tuned we’re looking into that. Meanwhile check out all the details and plans at Bell.ca.

– REDFLY launches support for the BlackBerry Bold 9000, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Tour 9630 smartphones–

SALT LAKE CITY – November 3, 2009 –Celio Corp today announced that its REDFLY Mobile Companion is now compatible with select BlackBerry® smartphones.

The REDFLY Mobile Companion is not a computer; it’s simply a large screen and full keyboard for a smartphone. With the REDFLY, BlackBerry smartphone customers now have the ability to increase their productivity typing long emails, editing documents, browsing web content and more using their existing smartphone applications and data plan.

Productivity is top of mind these days for mobile professionals, and according to the latest research by the technology economists at OMNI Consulting Group, this poses a key inflection point in the evolution of smartphone technology.

“Across the host of economic factors that matter most in selecting a technology such as REDFLY, the net improvement of productivity remains decisive in choosing a platform that enhances the ability to accomplish more work output with existing smartphone investments.” said Frank J. Bernhard, managing principal of the supply chain and telecommunications practice at OMNI Consulting Group. “Case data shows this trend to be positive in how users can actualize their fullest potential of the BlackBerry smartphone itself.”

“BlackBerry is a leader in the smartphone market and has an overwhelming acceptance among business users,” said Kirt Bailey, president and CEO of Celio Corp. “We’re confident that BlackBerry smartphone customers will enjoy the convenience of using REDFLY’s larger screen and keyboard to type emails, browse the Internet, and edit documents.”

The REDFLY Mobile Companion comes in two models – the C8N and C7 – and has a large screen, full QWERTY keyboard, touchpad, up to an 8-hour battery, and USB, VGA and media ports. The REDFLY has no OS, storage or processor, but uses the BlackBerry smartphone’s computing power to give users the ability to interact with the smartphone’s familiar user interface on an 800×480 resolution display. The REDFLY is currently also compatible with more than 60 Windows Mobile devices.

At launch, the REDFLY is supporting the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9000, BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 and BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630 smartphones. The driver for BlackBerry smartphones is offered free-of-charge for existing and new REDFLY Mobile Companion C8N and C7 owners and can be downloaded at http://m.celiocorp.com/install.

There’s been so much about security and spyware, I thought I’d present some facts. And to start with, I’m going to point out that it specifically states in the End User License for the BlackBerry App Store that BlackBerry does not warrant its uses against infection from viruses, spyware, or trojans.

BES is more secure. BIS has secure email. But outside of that, it’s not as secure. If it were, President Obama would not have needed a special tailored BlackBerry. It’s more secure than windows, yes. But it’s not infallible. This is why there are more articles appearing about the spyware, and why we should be aware.

SMobile Systems was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Their mobile security suite includes AntiVirus, Firewall, AntiSpam, Anti-Theft and Identity Protection, Secure Mobile Banking, and Parental and Enterprise Controls. They cover so many solutions, not only for Enterprise, but for Personal use as well.

They have the SMobile Anti-Theft and Identity Protection for $19.99. This annual subscription includes their Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware detection and removal, Lock and Wipe, GPS Locate, and Backup.

SMobile Parental Controls and Monitoring is available for $29.99 a year. This software contains the suite above, but also gives the parent the control to monitor where their child is, and control and see what texts are being sent, what’s being said, the ability to blacklist certain individuals from contacting their child, and view pics and content. With all the sexting and child molesters out there, it’s a great tool to have for peace of mind.

SMobile Security Shield is available for $24.99 a year. This has the Anti-Theft and Identity Protection Suite, but also has a firewall and Anti-Spam controls to keep unwanted messages from reaching you.

And for families there is the SMobile Family Bundle 4-Pack. This package is available for $79.95 a year and offers a huge savings. It contains 2 Parental Controls and 2 Anti-Theft and Identity Protection. So you can have protection for 4 cells.

So how does the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software work? The virus scanner runs in the background and monitors all the data coming in and going out of the device. If it detects any malware, it will pop up a notification alerting the user of an infection and directs the user to assist in removing it. I update mine daily, but you can have it set to update weekly if you wish. It’s easy to use and I haven’t had a notification yet.

Now whether or not you believe you could be at risk, or don’t want to purchase a protection suite, you can keep up on all the new viruses and spyware that SMobile Systems keeps current on in their Global Threat Center here. There’s the Mobile Security News and the Malware Library for you to view what’s new out there.

So while more sinister devs out there work hard to find ways to infiltrate the BlackBerry system, ways to pull off identity theft, and to find every possible weakness and flaw they can in the BlackBerry, it’s up to us to keep our own BlackBerry secure.

A new rumor has arrived that TELUS will be launching the anticipated BlackBerry Storm2 9550 on November 24th. This would be almost one year on the dot since TELUS first launch the Storm 9530. The new Storm2 will be a new CDMA smartphone, and will not be compatible with their HSPA network, which launches on November 5th. There is no word on pricing yet, but at least we have a rumored release date. Stay tuned for more details when they arrive…

Another update once again. Slacker Radio for BlackBerry has updated as well. No changelog is available, but I’m guessing this is to prepare for 5.0. I use Pandora mainly for my Radio fix, but Slackers does have the cache ability that makes it an asset.
