The Research and Consulting firm, IDC, listed the top-selling smartphone models in the US. It lists vendor sales to carriers and channels as well. So far it’s going on preliminary data. The actual numbers won’t be available till the end of the month. So let’s see what the firm says so far.

No 10 is the HTC Touch from Sprint, Nextel, and Verizon Wireless.

No 9 is the HTC Touch Pro from Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and others.

No 8 is the Palm Pre from Sprint.

No 7 is the T-Mobile G1 by HTC from T-Mobile USA.

No 6 is the Research In Motion BlackBerry Storm from Verizon Wireless.

No 5 is the Research In Motion BlackBerry Bold from AT&T.

No 4 is the Apple iPhone 3G (both versions) from AT&T.

No 3 is the Research In Motion BlackBerry Pearl (all 81xx series, excluding the Flip) from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and others.

No 2 is the Apple iPhone 3GS (both versions) from AT&T.

No 1 is the Research In Motion BlackBerry Curve (83xx series and 8900) from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and others.

So what does that say? Research In Motion rules the smartphone world, and the BlackBerry Curve is still holding the number one position. I’m not surprised, though I’m very curious to see how the numbers change with the BlackBerry Tour 9630 entering the smartphone scene. I really like the Tour, it’s been very reliable, and I’m curious to see if it will rise to the top or come pretty close.

Just when we were starting to think that Verizon took all the fun out of Alltel, here is some live photos of an Alltel branded BlackBerry Tour. We are not sure when this device will be launching on Alltel, but most likely we will see it close to their parent company Verizon’s launch on July 12th. Unfotunantly we don’t have any other details at this time.

GSM carriers never have an issue allowing a BlackBerry to send long texts. If it’s long, it will automatically break it into 160 character chunks. The term for this is Extended/Multipart SMS. It might break it into six messages, but you only pay for one. This is not supported on CDMA BlackBerry models such as the BlackBerry Storm, Curve 8330, etc. So this includes: Alltel, Bell, Sprint, Telus, and Verizon Wireless.

For those of us who love long texts but have a CDMA carrier, Cannon Soft has announced their solution for you. It is called Beyond160, v1.0.0. The application will automatically break up the texts into 160 character messages, and it will send them in order through the normal sms outbox with delivery confirmation. The application does have a fourteen day trial period. Be aware that although GSM carriers will charge as one text, CDMA carriers will charge per message. This means if you do not have an unlimited text plan, and the message is broken into three messages, you will be charged for three messages. So if you find yourself typing long messages, trying them to shorten them, don’t fret, just download Beyond160 today.

It’s been floating around in Canada for a while now, but looks like the United States is about to get their hands on the CDMA Pearl Flip. Alltel has announced that they will releasing the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 sometime “Early May” which means it could come as early as next week! Pricing is expected to be around $79.99 with two year term with a voice and data plan. With the Alltel getting purchased by Verizon does this mean they will also see the Pearl Flip? Stay tuned. Looks like Alltel is finally going to join the game and launch the Curve 8330. Alltel announced this morning that they will launch the BlackBerry Curve 8330 in all stores starting May 1, 2008. Alltel's Curve will go for $229.99 after $100 mail-in rebate with contract.
