RIM on Storm: “software glitches… are part of the new reality”

blackberry-storm-sidebysideWhen your spending anywhere from $200 to nearly $600 for a hot new BlackBerry product you would at least hope it would be running fairly well. Well personally I know after buying my Storm nearly two months ago I have had some small software issues and haven’t been that impressed. RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie addressed the issue in an article over at the WSJ. Here’s part of what he had to say:

RIM co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie said the companies made the crucial Black Friday deadline “by the skin of their teeth,” after missing a planned October debut. Mr. Balsillie said such scrambles — and the subsequent software glitches that need to be fixed — are part of the “new reality” of making complex cellphones in large volumes.

Submit your Apps to the BlackBerry Application Storefront

blackberry_logo_vertical_colorIf you design BlackBerry Applications well you should be reading this! RIM has just opened the doors to a brand new site which allows developers to submit their application to the storefront. This will allow developers to sell their apps similar to Apple’s AppStore on the iPhone. Last thing we heard was RIM plans to open the new App Center this March which means they need to pile up the applications. So if you have something worthy of submitting head on over to RIM’s submission site and send it in!

Pay As You Go Prepaid BlackBerry coming to Orange soon…

orange-payasyougo-blackberry

Good news for those in the UK! RIM has taken its first step in providing BlackBerry smartphones to prepaid service. Orange now has the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 in Titanium and Indigo listed as Coming Soon under the Pay As You Go section of their site. Previously RIM had talked about bringing BlackBerry to lower income families across the World and this seems to be a step in the right direction. You can see the Prepaid BlackBerry listed on Orange’s website here.

RIM files for weird SureType QWERTY Keyboard design

rim_qwerty-weird

In the past Research In Motion has been known to come up with some weird designs for their smartphones. Many of these ideas have never been actually put into the marketplcae and this is one we kind of hope doesn’t as well. RIM has filed patents for a weird compact style QWERTY keyboard configuration. Basically it appears like a modified version of their SureType keyboard then when turned sideways its a full QWERTY SureType keyboard. Very odd design indeed. Who knows what RIM has planned for this design if anything at all. Regardless its a great find by the folks at CellPasion.

BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac Preview!

bbmediasync-mac

RIM has offered a sneak preview of their new BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac. This comes right after they released a new update for PC users, which allows them to upload iTunes Album Art to their BlackBerry as well sync their iTunes music. We first saw the Mac version of Media Sync a few months ago and now RIM has officially released it for download. Even though RIM is allowing this to be downloaded its still considered a “preview” cause there is issues with it. If you have any other applications that Sync your BlackBerry such as Pocket Mac or Missing Sync then you will not be able to use them until Media Sync is uninstalled. Maybe RIM will be releasing the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac we keep hearing about??
