US Cellular Is Swapping Lives…Battery Lives

uscellular

I’m talking about battery replacements. Today US Cellular launches a Battery Swap program, leading the industry in something new and first of it’s kind. US Cellular Customers can come in to any US Cellular store and swap a dying or dead battery for a fully charged one, and it’s FREE. They are the only wireless company to do so. To be eligible, the phones have to have been purchased in the last eighteen months. No more than four swaps per handset are allowed in a month. For more concise details, click here to go to the US Cellular Battery Swap Program and while there are simple things that you can do to prolong battery life, this program is outstanding. Hopefully more wireless providers will take the cue and follow.

Review: Anagram for BlackBerry, Creating Contact Entries And Scheduled Dates For Free

Anagram by Textual is a software program that allows you to use the clipboard to capture information such as contact information, sales leads, meetings and appointments, and it works with BlackBerry email. Not only does it work with BlackBerry email, it gives you the opportunity to capture new contacts and appointments from any type of text on your BlackBerry including email signatures, directories, and even web searches themselves.

For my review, I installed the application on my Curve 8330, os 4.5. One thing I like about the application is that it has extremely simple user interface, instructions are very easy to find and explained. When you find the the text you want to save, you choose “Select” and highlight the text, choose “Copy” and then choose “Capture With Anagram”. Not only does it start processing and creates a card, it also allows you to edit it adding information or changing it as you’d like. You can also change your preferences as to which words are capitalized and more.

I used the program and followed the instructions, I really like the versatility and that you can correct the card. Perhaps even adding a contact picture if you have one. It’s easy and useful, I can see several reasons this program would be valuable. I had no issues with the software, I had the contact information come up easily, and received no error messages.

When you go to download the application, on the site there is information about the various application add ons, and there states in the Home and Try tabs that it’s free for 45 days. This is referring to the PC version, as the BlackBerry application is completely free. For personal use of the Outlook Extension, it is $34.95. Nicholas from Textual also let me know that there are a few issues that have been noted for Anagram for BlackBerry that Textual has been keeping track of and have solutions for. One is that the line breaks seem to be lost. Certain BlackBerry smart phones have this problem with the way they handle certain HTML formats. This occurs becuase the BlackBerry OS delivers the data worong to Anagram. You can work around it by choosing “Get Plain Text” before you capture it. They are working on a permanent solution and that will be included in the new release that will be released this week. The other issue is that some users are seeing an IndexOutOfBounds exception when updating a contact. Again, this is certain modelsof BlackBerry smartphones under certain conditions. This will also be included in the newer version. For more information on the issues, workarounds, and fixes you can read more them here at the Anagram press and issues blog>

To download the application you can go to the Anagram site>and from there you will leave your email and they will email you the download link.

Pros: The program is easy to use and easy to navigate. Everything is clear and concise and there’s no confusion. It works great when retrieving information and creating the contact. It has no error messages and has many potential uses. The fact you’re allowed to edit the contact is very nice too.

Cons: Only that it is Select, Copy, Capture. It’s done in three steps, but makes it easier to edit. That was the only con I could find. And perhaps if you are one of the ones who own the BlackBerry models having issues, but do note that help is on the way.

For appearance and navigating the program, I give the program five stars out of five. It’s clear and concise. For user friendliness, I give the program 4.75 out of five stars. This is only because of the copy and select and capture.  This is only for the extra steps to be taken. For use and effectiveness, five stars.

The Basic Set Up Of Your BlackBerry

blackberry

There is always your first BlackBerry, whether it be a work phone you receive, your very first purchased BlackBerry you purchase from an authorized agent, or even an online purchase. The difference in loving your BlackBerry and despising your BlackBerry all fall within the proper set up of your BlackBerry and learning from the start some of it’s capabilities. There’s so much more to a BlackBerry than just a phone with email, internet, and text. It’s a communication portal to the world. So I’m going to list the basic set up of the BlackBerry as it should be.

The first thing you’re going to do is make sure the esn activated on your account if you purchased it from online. Next you will turn your phone on and go through the programming steps. If you received it from work or purchased it from an agent, chances are that the phone is activated and programmed. The next step you will do is the Set Up Wizard. Run this icon and follow the steps. Removing other languages other than your main language is advised to save space on the phone.

The next step is to go to your messages icon. Click on the icon, and press the option or “BlackBerry” button. This is the button with the BlackBerry symbol on it. The menu will appear, scroll down to options and click the trackball. You will see General Options, click on it. Scroll down to where it has the line SMS and Email Inboxes. Click on where it says Theme Controlled and click the trackball. Choose Separate. This will separate your texts and emails. Click the option button and save. Back out and back out once more.

Next we will be going to the Options icon or the wrench. Now if any time during this set up the internet loads and asks you about email, by all means start setting up Follow the prompts in setting up your email and adding any emails you have, adding them to your phone. If it hasn’t done so yet, proceed to the Options icon. Click the Options icon, scroll to Advanced Options and tap again. From here you will have GPS as a choice, click on that. You will see Device GPS and GPS Services. On GPS Services, you can see it’s off by default. Click on the off or 911 only and change to Location on. Click the options button and save. This will enable GPS for your handset. Certain carriers do have limitations set on GPS so it may only work for certain applications. Back out, and go to the next item down, the Host Routing Table. If your internet has not loaded yet, you can click on this option, tap the options button and choose Register Now. Back out of the application, and be ready to set up your email.  Now if you are going to install a microsd card, it can be inserted on the side of the Pearl or beneath the battery of the World and Curve. Be sure the Pearl is off when inserting the card. When you turn the phone back on, go to the Options icon and click, scroll down to Media Card and click. Click the options button and choose Format Card. This will ensure the card will work with your BlackBerry. If you want to set up a key guard lock, you can go to the option Screen/Keyboard in options and click. Here you can change font, the size, the style. and light features, and the Right Side or Left Side Convenience Key can be set to keyboard lock. If you scroll down from the Media Card in the Options, you will see Theme. Clicking on it will show what themes are currently available on your phone. You can scroll and click on the theme desired. Begin to back out. It’s not freezing, it is installing your theme of choice.

Make sure you set the BlackBerry Messenger up by clicking on that icon and making sure your name shows and from here you can add any BlackBerry friends or coworkers. One important page for your browser is the BlackBerry Mobile website, from this site you can see what is available from your phone and download various apps and shortcuts for your BlackBerry, along with being able to ask a question and receive an answer that’s BlackBerry related. It’s a page that if your carrier does not have in your bookmarks, you should add. This can be downloaded here BlackBerry Mobile.

Sound and alerts are another thing that tend to  be important. Go to the sound icon which is called Profiles and looks like the sound horn icon you have on a pc. You can click on it and choose a Profile, as in Loud, Quiet, and Normal. I don’t advise Vibrate as it tends to use more battery life. If you want to set different tones for different apps, click the Profiles icon again, and scroll down past Off and you will see Advanced. Click on the Advanced option. Click on the Profile you have active. From each of these you can click on each one, click the sound for Out Of Holster and choose what type of sound from vibe to tone, next the Ring Tone, the Volume, Number of Beeps, Repeat Notification if you want it by Led Flashing or None, and Number of Vibrations. You have the In Holster options beneath that, and these are the sounds while the phone is in a case or holster. Click the option button, save, and back out. Choose your sounds for your apps and back out when you’re done.

This is just a basic set up, now you can get familiarize yourself with your phone, get comfortable, and will be able to start downloading ringtones, themes, and apps. This set up will ensure a more comfortable experience from the start with your BlackBerry and allow you to personalize it.

7digital MP3 Music Store Is Soon To Be Rocking BlackBerry Smartphones

7digital

DevelopIQ will be releasing their 7digital MP3 Music Store for BlackBerry smartphones this summer. It’s going to be nice to be able to download DRM-free music, and how this store works is you can download OTA low fidelity version of the song (low quality) but as soon as you are in a Wi-Fi area, it will download the high fidelity version.

From the description, this MP3 music store allows you to browse, search, discover, and purchase your high quality mp3 music, which will be replaced in a Wi-Fi area with the better quality version. I know this will greatly enhance Wi-Fi capable phones, but what about the BlackBerry phones without Wi-Fi capability?

Features are:

  • Browse by artist, album or tag
  • View charts and get recommendations
  • Preview and purchase anywhere
  • WiFi Auto-Sync delivery of purchases
  • BlackBerry internet push of desktop purchases
  • Integrated advanced media player
  • System Requirements – BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher with WiFi
  • No information is currently available as to what handsets or os are compatible with the Music Store. If you would like more information, you can sign up so you can be notified of the application release by heading over to  7digital>.

Survey Says….RIM Leads The US Business Industry

    business

The iPhone’s Develeloper’s Journal just posted the findings of a Report on their site. The Strategy Analytics Wireless Enterprise Strategy Service Report is available and the results are in. RIM is leading in the business industry with the smart phone market share at 37% in all sizes of US businesses, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform is following behind in second with 26%. According to the survey, RIM customers were less willing to change their handset than other users on other platforms.

Some of the companies surveyed were Verizon and AT&T who carry most of the business subscriptions, AT&T are just a bit ahead in large enterprises (companies with 1000+), and Verizon showed deeper numbers along small companies (under 100). Employees of large enterprises showed to be the most loyal BlackBerry users. In the phones surveyed they also included Symbian, Google Android, and Apple’s iPhone, but not one of those phones were in serious running for the competition of US Business use.

Update Alert: Facebook Steps Up Again

    blackberry-mobile

It seems like just yesterday we brought you news of Facebook’s new update, v1.5.0.31. The Previous update did so much. It integrated with the phone, allowing your contacts from your Blackberry Contacts to by synced with those in Facebook. If your contact did not have a picture, they are given their Facebook picture. It not only shows the pic with the F in the bottom right corner, but it also shows their Facebook name as well. It has integrated birthdays with the Blackberry Calendar. It made it so much easier and intergrated that Facebook became a new experience on the Blackberry. But they didn’t stop there.

    bbcontactsnfacebook

Well, as with any update, nothing is ever perfect. RIM has been listening to the complaints and two important issues are addressed with the new update RIM releases tonight. One is the Default Calendar. Second a phone number requested when manually linking contacts. Now you can be prompted. Announcing latest version v1.5.0.32. The new update looks just as good as the last one, only difference is that the issues have been addressed and resolved. Please go download it and let us know what you think.

You can download the update here

Software Update Alert: ÜberTwitter Keeps Getting Better

    uberfresh

ÜberTwitter recently updated, which I encourage you to update if you haven’t yet, and by all means please try it if you haven’t. I downloaded it and tried it when it first came out, but I noticed I had a few errors, but with the update at hand everything is running smooth and like a charm. In case you don’t know what ÜberTwitter is, it is an application that is considered a Twitter client for mobile phones, their first is for BlackBerry devices. It includes many features such as uploading pictures, integrating Google Talk, updating your location where you tweeted from based on cell phone towers, sending videos, and of course one of my favorite abilities, seeing your nearby tweeps.

It has gone from beta testing 1 to getting ready for beta 2 release. I’m excited for what’s in store. So let me go over some of the great fixes and updates that have arrived for this application:

    Sound/Vib notifications

    Battery usage trimmed significantly

    Manual and longer refresh

Increase name screen field size on the options screen

Increase the GTalk user field size on the options screen.

Add Direct Messages to and Direct Messages From timelines

Add ‘Follow’ to context menu when clicking on @screenname

Fixed the bug where fonts were not resetting on change.

There are more they are currently working on, but so far I have not received anymore errors, and I’m quite impressed with this service so far. I do have to wonder however, how this application will compare to the TweetGenius. I have TwitterBerry and SocialScope, but I have not had the invite from TweetGenius as of yet. So far the ÜberTwitter has been quick, and offers quite the few options. The icon is the Ü with the Twitter bird sitting inside. When there are unread tweets, the dots turn red.

If you are interested in trying a new twitter client other than the current one you may be using, or if you have ÜberTwitter or tried it and was frustrated, please come back and try it again. I am sure you will be very impressed and find the client extremely useful. You can download the ÜberTwitter ota from your BlackBerry here. Download ÜberTwitter and You’ll be rocking!
