BlackBerry App World has updated, so please update your app world if you haven’t already. I haven’t noticed many differences yet, but here’s a few screen shots to give you an idea.

The last time I reviewed Color ID, it was a few updates behind. And so much has happened since. I really like the Color ID, and it has become an integrated app of my BlackBerry. Not only has it updated, but there’s also a free version available as well, and we have a surprise.

Color ID is a fave app of mine, it’s a very important and integrated app on my BlackBerry. I use it for family, important friends and coworkers. Ever since the first day I tried it, I found it so useful in knowing who’s contacting me, being able to “triage” my emails, texts, and calls. Color ID is available in the BlackBerry Sync App Store for $5.99. This is a one time download price.

The description of the Color ID is as follows:

Know instantly who or where an email, sms or incoming call is from just from the colors of the flashing light on your Berry! Note: Your BlackBerry may require a battery pull after download.

I installed the Color ID on my BlackBerry Tour 9630, and it installed effortlessly. I did the battery pull after installing and when it rebooted, I found the icon as the CID. Clicking on it brings up a very colorful introductory screen. After that it prompts you to add a contact. But here’s the even better and easier part of it. If you install Color ID, you can go to your contacts, choose one, click the options button, and you have a choice of: “Add to Color ID”. This makes it so much easier if you have email and phone numbers already in the contact info.

If the information is not in the contacts, then you can add manually through the app. Go to the Color ID icon, click the options button and choose “Add New”. You have the following options: Name; Email; Phone Numbers; Color 1; and Color 2. It’s so easy to choose your colors, you can add more than one email and phone number as well. Each color has an assortment to choose from: red; pink; orange; yellow; green; cyan; blue; purple; white; and off. The blinking colors can be of any combination you’d like.

You can add all your important contacts in here, and also those you’d like to avoid as well. So over all, the app is really an essential add to your contacts since you can change the ringtone, but not the led light for each one. This gives you not one, but two to add. I would like to see support with the messenger as well, or BlackBerry pins. That would really be a great addition to it, but as it stands, it’s very useful.

Customer service is great too, any issues are promptly answered and addressed. Over all, there’s nothing to find wrong or any fault. Now for the news about the free version. You can find the free version of the app on BlackBerry AppWorld. The free version of Color ID only allows customization of two contacts. This is a great way to decide what you think of the app, or if you only have a few important contacts you want to be alerted of. To add more contacts you must choose upgrade. There’s a new software out that is going to make shopping more useful. Especially when it comes to Black Friday and Christmas shopping. And this software is free. The app is edocrab by Steelthorn Software. Edocrab is actually the word barcode spelled backwards, and barcode is what this app works off of besides your BlackBerry.

Steelthorn Software has a few different apps, and you’re probably familiar with them already. They have apps like the extremely useful QuickPull, BerryAnnoying, StormLock, and AutoStandBy to name a few. Some are paid, some are free. Well Edocrab is free. I had to try this app out, free or not, to see what all it could do. I love their moto for this app, “Leave the jungle, hit the beach”, it’s a great concept.

I downloaded and installed it on my BlackBerry Tour 9630. The app downloaded and installed quickly. When you go to find it, the icon sits as a barcode with a little yellow/orange crab in the bottom right. When you click on it, the top ribbon has the crab, the words edocrab by Steelthorn, and then the choices below are Scan, Search, Lists, and History.

Scanning may take a few times. It’s best in very well lit area and trying to avoid any side lines, just the bar code. If the barcode doesn’t show clearly to the app, it will show you how your barcode pic compares to an example barcode pic. If at first you don’t succeed, you’ll try again till you get it right. After a successful barcode pic, the app will search online and the next screen you’ll see is the product, the cheapest price it found for online, and when you click on the top product, it will show you pics, you can click on video if there’s any, and music if any. The next line is the prices and you can click on it to see which online sites are offering the cheapest prices for that product. Next is reviews. Click on reviews to see what other consumers have to say about the product. And then there’s add to a list.

There’s also Search, where you can search a product, Lists which is what you create of what you want, and History where you can pull up previous searches.

For free, you can’t beat it. I like the products Steelthorn has. Pros are that it is fast to search once you scan. It’s accurate in pricing. The app is free, you can’t beat that. I can see this app being very handy for birthdays (provided you give yourself ample time to be prepared to order online), weddings, anniversaries, holidays, you get the picture. Here’s another pro….the product I scanned was for the same price from Walmart as the scan said it was on Walmart’s online site. So before ordering you might want to just stop by the store and see if it’s available there at that price.

Cons are that is that it sometimes takes a few or more barcode scans before it will accept it. The only stores that it lists are those online (which most of us shop now anyways). And the app is currently available only on the Steelthorn site and the BlackBerry App World. Hopefully it will be available in the BlackBerry Sync Store as well.

Keep in mind that the app is Beta, which means there may still be some bugs or issues, so kindly report any if you experience such issues so that Steelthorn and the developers can make this app even better.

I can be so scattered when it comes to appointments, times, you name it. I’m always on the go, don’t sleep much, and my kids get so mad when I forget important events or appointments. I have finally started using my BlackBerry Calendar more, just to feel a bit more in the loop. LaterDude might just be the answer to my scattered thoughts.

Fabian Heuwieser designs apps that are useful or apps you find playful and genius. Some of the apps make you wonder why RIM never included them to begin with. I also would like to give you a short note of the apps Fabian has created. Not only does he have LaterDude and LaterDude Pro, he also has VibAndRing, WallpaperShuffle, TyperSpeed, BlinkWhileCall, and ForceRadioOn. He also has some fun free applications just for the storm such as Whippoh, ShaverBerry, BWatchDoggy, and BerryTorch.

To give you an idea of what LaterDude is, I’m going to list the definition and the features.LaterDude Pro is an application that reminds you to call, SMS or email someone. The efficiency of it is that it interacts with the system and creates a new event into the internal calendar or task application. After installation, LaterDude Pro is available for use on your device. It does not have an icon but is present on your system via the Menu in the following apps: Call Log, Messages, Text Messages and Contacts. You can find the user’s manual here.

I installed LaterDude Pro on my BlackBerry Tour 9630. It installed quickly and easily, and I rebooted my phone. Features are of course that reminders sit in the messages, email, texts, contacts, and the phone. When you access the menu in these applications, you will see at the top “Remind me later!” This is the Laterdude Pro. The first choice says: “What?” and gives you two choices, Calendar or Tasks. The next step is: “Remind as?” and the choices are Meet, Contact, Call, Email, and SMS. The next step is: “When?” and the choices are several ranging from 5 minutes to hours, days, and weeks all the way to 3 weeks. Now this can really make a difference. In the calendar, your reminder sits waiting to alert you.

I used it, and it works, alerts you so you don’t forget the little and important things like calling people back, recitals, appointments, meetings, etc. While listing things in the Calendar works, wouldn’t it be nice to have the “secretary” along side the schedule? One of the reasons I love my BlackBerry is because it is my companion, my “office”, and my entertainment. It’s not just a phone that keeps a portal to communication, it’s so much more.

If you could use a little more organization and reminders, then don’t miss out on this app. LaterDude Pro costs only $2.95 and is a one time fee. I recommend it so you don’t miss anymore events or call backs, be more productive and efficient, so you can have less time wondering why you didn’t have that v8. Give the usual response of “Later Dude” new meaning and make it happen.

Thanks to Jimmy from Medicine 3.0 who gave us a heads up on a great article, “25 Essential BlackBerry Apps For Health And Fitness“. I know with health and fitness being very important, you can never find enough health apps to download, but where can you start? This article gives you a place to begin.

The list is mostly taken from the BlackBerry App World. I am going to list them in order, but also going to list some apps that are in the BlackBerry Sync Store that are similar. What’s great is that the BlackBerry isn’t just your link to friends, family, customers. It’s your coach, your manager, and can help you help yourself. Let’s see what apps the article highlighted and I’ll list a few more for you as well.

1. Brio Calorie Tracker.  This app is popular and free, also allowing you to backup and sync your records. It has a graph for daily intake too.

4. FluRadar. This app by webXlls GmbH is not a game, it’s a way to keep up to date with the outbreaks of the Swine Flu or H1N1. Find out where the outbreaks are.

5. GoodFoodNearYou. This app by Global Fitness Media allows you to find the best food options at twenty restaurants near you, no matter your location. Using a Zip Code, you can search over 36,000 restaurant menu items from over 250,000 U.S. restaurant locations.

6. My Personal Health Record. This app works with an online site to be able to keep track of your family’s health record wherever you go.

7. Total Fitness For BlackBerry 1. The app runs for $29.99 and is a program that contains a database of over 5000 food items and all their nutritional information. It also contains a database of over 60 weight-training exercises sorted by body part. You can track blood pressure, pulses, measurements, etc.

8. VClinic Mobile Health. This app is supposed to help you figure out your calorie intake. By the reviews I did notice it’s measured by UK, so there’s the use of stones. And the food selection is primarily British. So I’m not sure if this free app would work.

9. Cholesterol Cutter. This app is $2.99 and contains a treatment plan setup with dietary and exercise goals. A diet plan to help you lower your cholesterol. Select the type of exercise you’re comfortable with. Keep a record of all medications.

10. Diet Fitness Diary. This app is $7.99. It tracks daily calories, has a burn-meter, offers diet tips and an image gallery. you can track you daily calorie intakes against your workouts, track health history, and customize a wellness program.

11. Food Gauge. This app runs $2.99. This is a food rating system that help you to make healthier eating choices by analyzing the types of food that you eat. When you enter the nutrition label information into the calculator, this tool will provide you with the food’s numerical score.

12. Health Browser. This app is $7.99. Browse diseases, conditions, emergencies, drugs, tips, drug dosages, drug conflicts, and images for a healthier lifestyle.

13. Hypertension. This app runs $9.99. It is for the management of hypertension and associated risks. It has definitions, medications, explains what you’re taking for what, and use calculators for BMI, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease risk and stroke risk.

14. iFitness.  This app is $3.99 and provides a comprehensive exercise database that provides clear pictures and instructions for over 230 exercises. Users can create a customized workout or use ten routines that offer varying goals from weight loss to ab definition and more.

18. Total Fitness For BlackBerry. This app by MOBITEQ is $29.99. This Blackberry app allows you to manage daily nutrition, exercise and health in one of the most advanced and complete fitness software programs available. Track your daily food intake, try the workout routines and track health data such as body weight, blood pressure and more.

19. Diet Science. This app is $10.99. This app provides a deeper understanding about the food you eat. Many calculators, nutritional pyramids and diets included, so you can learn more about how to develop a balanced and healthy diet for your lifestyle.

20. FitDeck Mobile. This app is $14.95 and it’s one of my personal faves. It is the Navy Seal’s workout using your body to strengthen and work out. A popular app that helps users get fit and stay fit. The exercises contained within this app require no weights or equipment as are designed for people of any fitness level. The exercises include simple descriptive images and instructions and users can shuffle exercises to create variety.

21. Glycemic Index Meal Planner. This app runs $13.99. Do you need a meal planner that calculates overall Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL)? This app can help build healthy diets for diabetics, for weight loss, for sports performance and more.

22. Health Diet Manager. This app is $19.99. This health and diet manager comes with an extensive food database that includes menus from fast-food restaurants, too. 24. Ascendo Fitness Diet and Exercise Assistant. This app is $29.99. Set objectives, track nutrition, exercise and strength training, measure your progress with graphs and calculate several fitness ratios using personal information in U.S. or metric measurements. This app includes a Windows desktop companion, which includes a comprehensive list of 7,293 nutrition items based upon the USDA Standard Reference Database. 25. Taber’s Medical Dictionary For Mobile And Web. This app is $49.99. Medical students, clinicians and citizens can gain access to over 60,000 entries, 1,000 illustration and 30,000 integrated audio pronunciations with this health-science dictionary. When you download this app, you can receive one year of access to Tabers.com.

Here’s a few more apps out of the BlackBerry Sync Store that are also healthy and helpful. These are out of the BlackBerry Sync Store, and I thought I’d share them with you. They are for those who are trying to be more serious with their health and with getting fit. And one for the professionals and health students.

Health and Diet Manager For BlackBerry. This app is $19.95. This handy app keeps you “in the know” on all kinds of things, like how many calories you need to consume on a daily basis to lose (or maintain) weight. Or how many calories and grams of fat are in that egg muffin sandwich with cheese and sausage (486 calories/31g fat) you grabbed for breakfast. Or that walking for 45 minutes during lunch burns about the same number of calories as a small Veggie Delite sandwich from Subway. Or that the protein count in that particular sandwich, 9g, will surely having you running for the snack machine by mid-afternoon.

If you need to watch your weight, EzMobiGo’s Weight Tracker can work with you to stay in shape.

Each calculator takes into account personal information like height, weight and age so the results are tailored to your context.

We have great news for those of you who like your Fantasy Football ‘09. Yahoo now has a FREE Fantasy Football app for your BlackBerry, what a great combination! I can’t say I’m a sports fan outside of hockey, but I know there are a few football fans out there just like my brothers.

Yahoo has released their Fantasy Football app in the BlackBerry App World, which will allow you to monitor your team from your BlackBerry including checking your league and player stats, and changes to the roster.

Some of the features of the app are as follows:

Live Scoring! Follow your team scores in real time.

Add and Drop Players: It’s that easy…switch them out as you see fit.

Matchups: Can’t remember who you play next week? The schedule rests in your hands, for you to look at a bat of an eye.

It’s one thing to browse through the app on your BlackBerry in hand, sometimes you just want to know if the app’s available and read in a full screen. Even iTunes has an online version, and RIM has followed as well. BlackBerry App World online version officially launched Tuesday and mirrors the online app with a few extras included.

There’s even a spotlight on the featured apps, a search bar, and gives you the ability to to browse by the category you’re searching for. Pricing information is available to you as well as the minimum requirements, ratings by star and even users comments. There are screenshots of the apps and hyperlinked icons to share with social networks or by email.

For now there’s no way to pay or actually do an order online. You need to send yourself a link, which takes you to the site from the phone and a link to the app. A little out of the way but it’s a start. Rome was not built in a day, and we know that RIM will improve the process. Perhaps with a little time it will get become like the BlackBerry Sync Store, where you can buy your app online and a link sent with an activation code to your phone.

I’m happy to see RIM reaching out online as well as the phone. What possibilities would you like to see for an online version?
