Don’t Mean To Burst Your Bubble, But There’s A Free Game: Bubble Popper

Our store has a wide selection of software available, but there’s one thing to keep in mind: We have not forgotten that many of the best things in life are FREE, and in today’s economical crisis, free is great! So you’re going to see not only reviews or announcements on current and upcoming software, you are going to see free applications that are available from our store.

So today I’m introducing this great Freebie. Bubble Popper v1.0, by Aim Productions. The description reads that it’s a simple yet addictive game with bubbles in five colors. The object of the game is to move smaller chains of bubbles out to form larger chains to take out since the longer the chain, the more points awarded. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, I tried the game, and it’s fun. They weren’t exaggerating about addictive. As you figure out the puzzle game, you find yourself thinking one more game…and you know how that goes. It’s fun, and as a puzzle it’s hard to stop. The game at first takes a bit to load but it’s easy to use and figure out.  I’d have to somewhat compare it to Chuzzle without the little balls shaking or the rows locking. Give it a try and see what you think. After all, what have you got to lose?

Review: PhoneFace v1.2 by Electric Pocket, Speed-Dial You Can See And Read

phonefaceicon

PhoneFace is a software app for the BlackBerry that allows you to flip through pictures to dial. It is under $10 and is to speed-dialing what FlipSide is to mp3’s. I installed this application on my Curve 8330, and tested it out. The description of the program states that it allows you to scroll through your contacts by their full-color pictures. You can call, text, pin, or email your contacts. You can also combine your Facebook and Twitter profiles to find the best picture.

The features included are:

  • Get fast access to the people you call most often.
  • Pick full color, full screen pictures from your BlackBerry or storage card.
  • Connect to Facebook & Twitter to find the best pictures of your friends.
  • Take photos with your BlackBerry camera.
  • Pick from included images for home, office, sweethearts and more.
  • Flick to the friend you want to call with your trackball or finger
  • The program is so reminiscent of FlipSide, an mp3 player also by Electric Pocket. When I installed the program, it appears as an orange face of a dialer.  The application can also use Facebook to scan your contacts and use pictures. I was able to add my contacts easy. The menu was easy to find, it allows you to add a contact, change the photo using the Facebook and Twitter options. Now the Twitter is easy integrate using only your name and password. Your Facebook requires that you go to the PhoneFace website and that you go from there to the application on Facebook from your computer. The application will give you a code ito activate over the air. The application will then seek the best picture of the contact using these searches. I did notice if you had a picture in your contacts, it is larger than if you add it from your card via the PhoneFace application. I dialed a contact from the application and it worked, email and text as well. It has Rotate Photo, Delete Contacts, and About/Help. The only thing I would have liked to see from this application is if the contact called or emailed, that they’re picture and name show up as well, but this is only a visual phone book of sorts that you can use the pictures to find your numbers. Scrolling through them was seamless. It has Set Ringtones in options, but it requires you to download and install Ringo to use it for setting different ringtones for the contacts. Without Ringo, you are unable to use PhoneFace to set ringtones. The Options also has Advanced. In Advanced you are able to add PhoneFace to all menus or not, to Add Photos to Address Book or not, to Allow http connections or not, to Auto-update Facebook photos on or off, and you choose the sort mode by Alphabetical or by use.

My rating for the product is as follows. For the display of the program it gets a 5 out of 5. It’s a bright icon, easy to open and doesn’t freeze. For user friendliness, I’d say it’s 3.75 stars out of 5. I had to dig around, the Twitter was easily found. I had to go to change picture to find it, and the Facebook required me to add an app to my account to be able to activate the phone and application on the phone so it could search. I give it for use a rating of 4 out of five for what is left wanting. It does make it easier by name instead of pictures. It also makes for a great coversation piece. The program only works for you to contact your contacts but does not have any influence when your contact contacts you in any mode. And also requiring you to install Ringo to be able to choose the ringtones for your contacts.

    Rating: ★★★★½

Updated Software: Blink by VikySoft, v3.21

    iconavatar1

I was browsing through the software store today and realized that there’s an updated version of Blink, by VikySoft. The software version jumped from 3.1 to 3.21. For those who have never heard of Blink, it does a variety of neat things. It’s an application that alerts you to calls, missed calls, and sms texts. You are in control of the colors and speeds, with a choice of seven colors, seven speeds (new update has advanced speed choice), and different modes such as Current mode, Disco mode, Background mode, and Flashlight mode. The new update now adds Alert mode. The Flashlight mode stays on saving power off the battery more effectively than other means. The new update also includes Autostart, you no longer have to start the program every time you restart your BlackBerry. For Storm users, it’s recommended to disable the compatibility mode in your system options.

If you already have Blink, you may need a new activation code when you update your Blink, so log into your account to get your new code. For both those who have it and would like to update, and those who would like to look before they blink, the download can be found here.

Preparing For Earth Day: SAVE THE BLACKBERRY!

    Blackberry Pain

    The Purchase

So you purchased your BlackBerry smart phone, and you have taken it home, but what have you purchased to protect your investment? The BlackBerry deserves to be protected in every way possible, so I am going to go through the various ways of protection and what is in your best interest. You wouldn’t want anything to happen to your investment or best friend, which is what our BlackBerry smart phones feel like to us. The most important asset to your phone will be insurance before you even leave the store. It’s like Murphy’s Law, what can go wrong will. And while the BlackBerry phones are built tough, they are not unbreakable or dog proof. So insurance is something you should never leave without. Now for the sake of argument, I have a Curve 8330, but the site does allow you to change the BlackBerry to the current model you have.

    Memory

The first item I’ll start with is the microsd card. These are great for many reasons, such as extra memory for the phone so you don’t take space on the phone for pictures, movies, music and ringtones. So this is one I would highly recommend you begin with. You can find them in all sizes from 1GB to 16GB. You can find them here

    View To Appeal

The next item you will need is a screen protector, such as Mobi Products Screen Protector (3 pk for $14.95 found here). They’re nice in that you can avoid scratches on your screen and keep it clean and dust free. You can also find privacy screens, such as Case-Mate Large Privacy Screen Pro ($14.95 found here) which are really nice to keep prying eyes off the information you are viewing.

    I’ll Never Let You Go

For keeping the phone safe, another great asset is the case. Yes, there are all sorts of cases designed for BlackBerry smart phones these days, but my recommendation is either a soft case like the BlackBerry holster cases ($19.95 found here), one that keeps it clean and free from dust like the Smart Skin from Case-Mate ($19.95 found here), or the exceptional OtterBox cases ($49.95 found here ). Now the BlackBerry holster case is leather, soft interior which keeps the lens and screen protected and it also has a magnet that helps save battery life. I like the Smart Skin because it has a unique feel to it, it’s easy to grip, covers everything except the lens and screen (it does have a screen protector included) and the trackball of course, and with keys being covered it keeps your phone nice and clean. The OtterBox is great for those who are hard on their phone. It protects the screen and lens of the camera, has a hard plastic casing that raises above the lens and screen, and also has a rubber outter covering that fits over the plastic casing which keeps it safe from falls, and has a holster it locks into. I love this because you now have a phone that is liquid resistant, dust proofed, and protected from falls.

    BlackBerry Come Back

There are a few programs as well to protect your BlackBerry and should be kept in mind. Anti theft programs such as BAK2u PhoneBak BB ($29.90 found here ). What this program can do is allow you to take your stolen phone and track it, or even wipe the phone from where you are.

    The List Goes On

While there are several other ways to protect your phone, these are the accessories and software I would recommend to start. There are several options for the car (various items here), such as holders, sticky pads, and BlueTooth devices, and a car charger is nice to have so you don’t have a dead phone on a trip ($9.95 and up, Smartphone Experts here) but these are the ones you want to make sure you have from the start. If you have any favorite accessories or some stories to share, please share with us.

    Review: SMS Eraser for BlackBerry

    The SMS Eraser Icon

    The SMS Eraser Icon

If you’re worried about your texts being copied, forwarded, or saved, and have been wondering if there’s a solution for that, then SMS Eraser is the program you are seeking. The SMS Eraser is published by BigString Corporation, and is version v3.0. I used it on the Curve 8330. The program allows you to text word texts (sms) and picture text (mms) to another phone, which will self destruct after opening once, twice, or fifteen seconds. It gives peace of mind knowing that the text will be gone from both phones after the allotted time frame chosen. It is perfect not only for individuals, but for businesses as well.

After installing the program, it appears as a smilie with a lock. It opens giving you a choice of: New Message; Inbox; Drafts; Sent Messages; and Manage Groups. In Manage Groups you are able to make groups of your contacts to send texts to all at once. When creating a new message, you choose the recipient from your address book which the program displays for you. After choosing your contact, you are able to choose from the following: New Destructing Text Message; New Text Message; New Destructing Picture Message; and New Picture Text. The next list of options after choosing your message is: Open 1x, 2x, or in 15 seconds; and insert Smilie. You can send to one or multiple recipients. I really liked the graphic smilies you can choose, they range in a variety of choices which the text on our Blackberry phones lacks.

And now, I’d like to share what makes this program so unique. The messages are hard to copy and print, they cannot be forwarded, and they are deleted off both handsets, and the security issues concerning text are now addressed. This includes both word and picture texts. You choose how often they can open before it self-destructs, or give it a time limit. The program is easy to use, is not complicated at all, and includes a pdf file explaining how to use the application which you can download and view at any time.
I sent the word text to various recipients and it worked well, I was able to see it from their handset, and how it looked to them. The smilies actually move, so it’s similar to a smilie from a messenger on the computer. It was easy to use, easy to send, and that I had no worries after I saw it “delete”.

The Pros of the program are so obvious. First pro is that the text and picture text are deleted in either a time frame or opening. There are smilies available to the texts that the phone does not have, and it allows peace of mind as it can be used for both personal and for business.
The Cons of the program are as follows. There is only a fifteen second time frame, not longer. So if you’re recipient is busy, the text may not be there. It only does word and picture, not video, which would be nice to see in the future.

I would have to say for usability, the program is four and a half stars. It’s very easy to use and very self explanatory, but it also leaves room for a few desired changes. For the function of the program, I would rate it about four stars. The only reason if falls a little short of five stars is because of the few items it lacks. Otherwise, it’s great, and for the average user and for the business user.

Review: Getting Fit With Fit Deck for BlackBerry

    NexFit options

Fit Deck is an application by MobileXware. The program installs as an application called NexFIT. The application holds a program which is based on exercises placed on slides. The exercises were created by former Navy Seal and ACE certified trainer, Phil Black. The program was originally fitness slides and cards and are now available for the mobile phone as well, which is where the name Fit Deck comes from: the deck of cards.

I really was excited to review this program, especially since I would be able to feel better about justifying my BlackBerry with another reason to be my partner, it can be my personal trainer as well. The Application is easy to use, and can be adapted for all fitness levels: Beginner; Intermediate; and Advanced. They are full body workouts that require no equipment, no gym membership necessary, using the NAVY Seals training of using your own body to keep fit. You can do it as long as you want. The Important Info explains how to use the application.

I installed and used the application on my BlackBerry Curve 8330. When I installed it, it showed up as an X icon. After installing the application and registering it, the menu that comes up has several options: Continue Workout; Shuffle Slides; Sort by Slide Name; Sort by Body Region; Goto Slide; Important Info; Exit; and Register. When the program is registered, you have fifty slides. Each slide tells you how long or how many to do per level. There is an introductory in Important Info that is 9 slides explaining the program and how to use it.
The Pros of the application are that you have your exercises with you wherever you go, it is easy to use and to understand, there is no getting lost or trying to figure it out. The exercises are not hard, because they can be adapted and easy to follow. You don’t have to do all the slides and can do them at your own pace. For instance, they advise each slide take one minute, to warm up and cool down before and after each workout, and they explain about proper hydration and what to watch out for. They also advise doing them every other day, and doing a few to start. I really liked the idea that there were no weights required, that the exercises can be easy and be made challenging to challenge and build strength no matter what your level of fitness is. There’s no more investments to be made outside the program itself.

The cons were that there is no place to include your weight or measurements, which would be a way of keeping track of progress. I would really have liked to have seen this included with the program. It would be nice as well for it to keep track of when you were last on, although it does remember the last slide you last viewed. Perhaps in the future they may include it, or it would be nice if they left an online site that you can log in and place your measurements or weight if it’s not included with the phone program. If you are not a self starter or have the will power to do it on your own, this may be hard to use unless you make your BlackBerry your partner in this quest for fitness.
I would rate the user friendliness as five stars, because it’s very easy and the concept is very nice. For presentation I would give it nearly four stars because it’s very basic, but it’s based upon the deck of fitness cards and looks just like them. And over all I would give the application four stars because of the lack of what it could include to make it a very impressive application.
