OS 4.7.0.85 leaked for Vodafone’s BlackBerry Storm 9500

A new unofficial OS has leaked for the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm 9500. The new OS is version 4.7.0.85 which we recently saw released for the Storm 9530. So far we aren’t to sure of what this new OS version offers, however with the CDMA 9530 version it didn’t seem to run that well. I don’t recommend upgrading to this OS if you haven’t used a beta OS before (They can cause your device to become useless). There obviously is a reason RIM hasn’t publically offered this version just yet. But if your feeling lucky you can give it a shot the download link is here.

Leaked BlackBerry OS 4.7.0.85 for BlackBerry Storm 9530

Yup its time for another leaked BlackBerry Storm 9530 OS upgrade. This new version 4.7.0.85 doesn’t seem to have any huge improvements in it. Keep in mind this is a leaked copy of the OS. It is generally not suppose to be available to the public therefore installing this upgrade could harm your device. We nor RIM take any reponsibilty to any damage caused to your device or memory. Just a quick warning before you going playing around… Any who CB user vdiesel posted a quick rundown of changes he notices from the previous leaked version (4.7.0.83) and the new one (4.7.0.85):

1. Accelerometer feels about the same (possibly a split second slower)
2. Camera is about 2-3 seconds faster (I timed them)
3. Keyboard speed is about the same (still pretty fast)
4. No media card or stuck Verizon logo errors (so far, last time it appeared later)
5. The IM bug that was fixed in .83 was reintroduced in .85 (the landscape keyboard does not push up the text area so you can see what you’re typing)
6. Browser is more quirky about loading pages, sometimes it does and sometimes it just sits there with a white screen trying to load the simplest pages
7. In general, it feels a tad bit snappier, especially with screen to screen transitions

Overall, I saw no major improvements here besides the camera (though it’s still too slow), and I was a bit disappointed with the IM keyboard bug returning and the quirky browser behavior. But if this build is more stable in the long run (no more crashing), then it was worth the trouble. I have say though that, overall, I am unimpressed with this one. .83 had major performance improvements, .85 doesn’t seem to add much, and actuallys takes away in some regards as mentioned earlier. I’ll update on its stability as I use it more.

BlackBerry OS 4.7 simulator gets updated! Now available for download…

blackberry-logo-black

Great news for developers this morning! RIM has just released a new version of the Java BlackBerry Developer Tools for OS 4.7 and primarily the BlackBerry Storm. This new update is a free download for developers to test their applications and see exactly how they will run on the Storm before actually releasing it. Here’s a rundown of the new features:

BlackBerry JDE v4.7 Feature Enhancements

  • Contains the BlackBerry® Storm™ smartphone simulator
  • Touch Screen Support — Applications designed using the MIDP User Interface or BlackBerry User Interface will have built-in support for touch screen input. Any applications with custom User Interfaces will be able to receive the input events from taps, swipes, and gestures
  • Orientation and Rotation Support — Applications can react to the changes in rotation of the smartphone, based on user movement. This support enables an application to re-draw its screens or do custom processing based on a rotation event
  • Accelerometer Support — The Accelerometer Support in the BlackBerry JDE v4.7 enables support for motion above and beyond simple rotation. This feature allows full support for an application to query the accelerometer sensor and get data from the x, y and z axis to enable 360-degree motion sensing
  • Virtual Keyboard API — The Virtual Keyboard API supports the ability of an application to show or hide the virtual keyboard on a per-screen basis. This allows applications to control when the virtual keyboard should or should not be visible
  • Digital Rights Management (DRM) APIs — Applications can now install certificates on DRM protected content
  • Set Theme Wallpaper — The Set Theme Wallpaper feature provides the ability for an application to set the homescreen wallpaper of a BlackBerry smartphone
  • Camera and Media Integration enhancements — New APIs enable the developer to take advantage of several media enhancements:
    • Image Targeting — When an image is taken by the user in the camera application, one of the available actions allows the user to send the image to a specific target. The new image targeting integration allows an application to register as a handler of that image for the “send to” action
    • Dynamic Menu Items — When a custom application is registered as a handler for a specific content type, that application will also receive a “send to:” menu item in the BlackBerry media application
    • Video Recording — Customer applications now have the ability to invoke the video recorder application to enable video capture

They may have been a little behind due to the Storm launch but TELUS Mobility today released OS 4.5. They have released OS 4.5.0.77 for both the Pearl 8130 and Curve 8330. For some odd reason they didn’t bother to upgrade the BlackBerry 8830, which is one of TELUS’ most used business devices. The new OS is available starting today for download. Simply download the update then connect your BlackBerry to the Desktop Manager software.

Leaked shots of BlackBerry Application Suite for Windows Mobile

It appears hell has frozen over. Looks like RIM is still working on their Windows Mobile Application Suite. This program will allow a Windows Mobile device such as the HTC Pro to run a version of RIM’s BlackBerry OS. Ronen from BerryReview scored some actual shots of an HTC Pro running RIM’s new Application Suite. This certainally kills the BlackBerry connect software, which was never really successful in RIM’s books. Anways Ronen seems to think that we may see this new software pop up really soon…
