50reboot

I was reading up on some news today when I stumbled across something exciting. Kevin, from CrackBerry, was able to attain documents that explain in detail what the new OS 5.0 contains in features. It’s safe to assume that the newer upcoming phones will be released loaded with the new OS, and be available for the current phones with 4.6 which includes the Bold, The Curve 8900, The Pearl Flip, and the Storm. It’s rumored perhaps the 83xx series as well, but nothing else has been listed or suggested as of yet.

Out of the features listed are the following: A follow up flag for your emails (with request, color, status, and due) and they will sync flagged with your desktop (BES 5.0), you will be able to manage mail folders on your phone which will include moving, renaming, and deleting them (again, 5.0 BES), the ability to forward an appointment to a third party (BES 5.0), appointment notes with embedded documents can now viewed and downloaded on your device (BES 5.0), a files application to search for local files and remote files on a corporate intranet (5.0 BES), wireless contact synchoronization is going to include multiple Contact Folders, Personal Distribution Lists, contacts that are stored in your public and shared files (BES 5.0), and when viewing PowerPoint you will be able to see transitions and animations.

By pressing and holding the BlackBerry button will now bring up the Application Switcher, pressing the BlackBerry button once will bring up the menu and pressing it twice will bring the default menu action.  There will be new homescreen options which will include settings of set the download folder, set the wallpaper, set the theme, and reset Icon arrangement. Included now are Sticky dates in message list so as you scroll through messages the date will stay at the top, Conference Call Integration in Appointment details which means that the conference call details can be a calendar appointment with the information for both the moderator and participant and will need to be entered by CCM (for the Moderator) and CCP (for the Participant), there will be updated standard and premium versions of Documents To Go by Data Viz (v1.006 will preloaded and ready to upgraded by the user), there will be better application management alerting the user to the memory running low and what applications can be removed that aren’t used frequently, BIS Thick Email Client will be a java application with more integrated experience and will list the popular mail service providers you can choose from. You will have the ability to create, edit and delete mail filters and your signatures right on your own device, you will be able to resize a photo when sending, you will be able to see the progress of an email upload with the Email Upload Progress Indicator. A Device Boot screen will display the word BlackBerry and be more appeasing to the eye. you’ll be able to enable event sounds which includes Device On, Device Off, Cable Connected, Cable Disconnected, Full Battery Charge and Battery Near Depletion. You will be able to set your ringtone from your Phone Dialing Screen or Device Options, show the last row in options as a half height row so the user can see Advanced Options is there below, you will see the name of the Profile in the Title so you will know what profile you are editing. There will be more simplified configuration options for sound and profiles. Now all profiles except Normal and All Alerts Off can be renamed.  All Profiles except for Normal, All Alerts Off, and Vibrate can be deleted.

Map enhancements include even better panning and zooming, making it much faster. A new top layer screen will allow you to search for various layers of information such as points of interests and locations, address search will handle queries much more intelligently and will support North America and Western Europe in comparison to the current Canada, UK, and USA. There will be photo geotagging on maps, and they will appear as thumbnails on layers on the map.

blackberry_storm

Hi Stormies!

Kevin over at Crackberry has just let us know that OS 4.7.0.132 has been leaked for the BlackBerry Storm 9530!  It’s nice to see they have been keeping the updates coming!  I know that with every release, Verizon users are groaning because they have yet to see an official update.  But I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that an official update will come for Big Red sooner than later.

As is the case with any beta release, please do not attempt to install this update unless you know what you are doing, to prevent any unwanted damage to your baby.   Carriers do not support beta OS installs, so any problems you may encounter are your own to solve.  However, we are always here to help if you need it!

Click here to download the update and follow the standard process to install it.

Thanks again Kevin!!

Preparing For Earth Day: SAVE THE MEMORY!

I know we all have had some times where we’ve had to do the battery pull because of the hourglass taking forever and a day. And it usuallly happens when we least need it to. So in light of this, I am going to go over the best practices for freeing memory up and helping your phone last longer between battery pulls. So let’s begin…

If You Don’t Do It, The Manager Will

I am going to explain the reason you lose data when you have low memory, the BlackBerry has a Low Memory Manager. Now you can save your own memory by removing old data and applications you never use, and that includes BrickBreaker if you never use it. But what the Low Memory Manager does is when your Black Berry runs low, it starts by removing cached data, then it will start with medium priority such as old emails and old calendar entries, and last it will make the email applications start erasing emails.

ALWAYS Keep Up With Updates

The very most important and crucial thing you can do is to keep your operating system, software on the phone and the BlackBerry Desktop Manager updated to the latest versions. If you have third party software, it’s a great idea to keep checking and make sure that you have the latest version. The Operating System of your phone is updated for a reason and so is the Desktop Manager. Keeping them updated addresses issues that have been fixed. To update the Desktop Manager you can go to the BlackBerry website. To update the Operating System, go to your cellphone carrier’s website. For third party, you can go where you downloaded the software.

Freeing Up Memory By Playing Your Card

So the first thing we’re go over is freeing up space. I always recommend a microsd card for the BlackBerry. It’s added storage and frees up memory. Moving all your pictures, videos, voicenotes, music, and ringtones to the card will free up memory. Format the microsd card so you are able to use it, click on the camera icon, click the options button, select options, set store pictures on the media card and save. This will automatically save anything you download now to the card.

Lose It If You Don’t Use It

Removing any languages you don’t use and the sample video from the BlackBerry will help as well. I usually remove these at set up, but for those of you who have done it yourself it’s very easy to remove. Go into Options> Advanced Options>Applications. In Applications, highlight the languages you see that you don’t use and choose option button and delete. Then highlight the BlackBerry sample video, click option button and delete. After doing this, it’s recommended to do a battery pull and wait thirty seconds before reinserting  the battery.

Move It

Changing how much space is set aside for pictures will help too. Media>Pictures and option button then options. You are going to set the Device Memory Limit to the lowest option and you are going to change the reserved Pictures Memory setting to zero MB. Once again do a thirty second battery pull.

Less Room, More Memory

Changing your calendar and messages to stay on for thirty days will help as well. For changing the calendar you go to the calendar icon, then Options>General Options. Set it for thirty days, or even fifteen if you don’t need to see ahead of that. For messages, go to the icon and then Options>General Options and change that as well. Make sure you are saving the changes.

Free Your Cache

Clearing the browser and the history will free up more memory. Open your browser, click options button, Options>Cache Operations. Clear all the options then hit the escape key.

Compress For Room

Enabling the Content Compression on your phone will help as well. Go to Options>Security and Enable Content Compression.

Programs to the Rescue

Now for those of us who just feel we want more, there are some great applications available from our store. You can try the QuickPullv.2 (free), and Memory Viewer ($3.99) and a few others that range in price. You can find them here: http://store.blackberrysync.com/PlatformMain.asp?platform=5&sString=memory

OS Alert: BlackBerry OS 5.0 leaked for Bold and Curve 8900!!

bold-javelin-50

We all know that RIM has been working on OS 5.0 for a while, but it finally looks like someone has leaked OS 5.0 for the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Curve 8900. These OS’ are extremely early beta copies and not designed for every day use. It’s recommended that this OS 5.0 should only be used for beta testing software. If you feel like testing out OS 5.0.0.90 on either of these devices make sure you do a full backup before installing.

Download OS 5.0.0.90 for BlackBerry Bold 9000 >

Download OS 5.0.0.90 for BlackBerry Curve 8900 >

With any luck we will see OS 5.0 launch early next month at RIM’s WES (Wireless Enterprise Symposum) 2009. Stay tuned…
