Review: OtterBox Commuter Series for BlackBerry Tour

rbb4-9600s-20-c5otr.1

I’m always impressed with OtterBox cases, and how they protect my BlackBerry. For the past week or so I’ve been testing out OtterBox’s new Commuter Series for the BlackBerry Tour. The Commuter Series is the mid-range case from OtterBox, which combines the best of both worlds with its tough silicon skin, and hard shell. The Commuter Series basically just combines two already great products, the Impact Series and Defender Series, which we’ve reviews lots.

REDFLY Mobile Companion Announced: The BlackBerry Laptop

RedFly Mobile

For some of us, the keypad of our BlackBerry is a little small, some consumers are put off by the size of the keys even. But soon there will be a solution for those of us who feel that way. The BlackBerry Laptop by Celio REDFLY. It is actually a mobile companion.

The companion when connected to your phone gives the user a 7 or 8 inch screen and a larger keyboard that you can type on in laptop form. This would be similar to a netbook. Now the company has had the Windows Mobile version, and it hopes to have the BlackBerry version available by Christmas of this year for BlackBerry devices with 4.6 or higher, such as the Bold, Tour, Storm, etc. It sports an 800 x 450 pixel resolution and weighs under 1k.

To use the device, you simply connect your phone to it by Bluetooth or USB. There will be two different companions available, C8N and C7. Now keep in mind that these units do not have a processor, no memory, no storage available, and no Operating System. They are only an extension of your phone.

What will expected battery life be like? It appears the 8 inch will have a battery life of 8 hours for the eight inch device and 5 hours for the seven inch device. The models are going to be priced at $199 for the 7 inch version and $249 for the 8 inch model, not bad when you think about it.

The device requires no contract, if it’s stolen there’s no personal information to be retrieved or exploited, and I don’t know how many times I hear “If I could just find a monitor and keyboard, I would have no need for my laptop when I take my trips.”

What are your thoughts on these devices? Yay or nay? Will you be looking into purchasing one or not? Share your thoughts, we’d like to know.

l_hs500_bt_headset

I just popped over to ShopBlackBerry (RIM’s Accessory Store) to see what they had to offer, only to find RIM’s new Bluetooth headset. The new BlackBerry HS-500 headset features a newer smaller design, with background noise reduction and great price point. This product is listed on ShopBlackBerry for $79.99 USD / $89.99 CAD, however its listed as Coming Soon and is not yet available for purchase.

Get the freedom of hands-free calling with the easy-to-use BlackBerry® Wireless Headset HS-500. With the simple touch of a button, you can answer, end, and mute calls, or activate voice dialing, even while you’re juggling your keys and coffee in the morning. Plus, the volume automatically adjusts and background noise is reduced, so your calls and turn-by-turn directions can be heard loud and clear in noisy environments. With the quality and performance you expect from a BlackBerry® product, the BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500 fits your life so you can hit the road with confidence.

  • Call control button – control calling features like, answer, end, mute and voice activated dialing with the press of a button

  • Works with selected third-party GPS mapping applications – listen to turn-by-turn directions

So did RIM officially announce this headset? or did they sneak it by everyone?

Introducing the BlackBerry Tour Commuter Series from OtterBox

rbb4-9600s-20-c5otr.1

Our friends at OtterBox have just introduced their latest case designed for the BlackBerry Tour. The new Commuter Case is a cross between OtterBox’s current Impact Skin and the heavy duty Defender Case. The Commuter series includes three layers of protection, the first being the screen protector, followed by the polycarbonate shell, and last the silicon skin. Starting today they are available from OtterBox for only $35, and should be arriving in the BBSync Store soon.

The OtterBox Commuter™ Series case for the BlackBerry® Tour™ 9600 Series offers the best of both worlds; incorporating elements from the rugged Defender™ Series line with the silicone, skin-like Impact™ Series line to create a slick case designed with your style in mind. It’s protection without the bulk. The exposed silicone corners dissipate impact away from the device for additional bump and shock protection and the smooth outer layer allows the case to easily slide into your pocket or purse. All buttons are fully functional through the case and the audio jack and USB port are accessible through silicone plugs.

A look at iSkin’s for the BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900 and Storm

iskin-bb-overview

iSkin has been known to design some really nice iPhone cases, but now they’ve expanded their lineup by introducing cases for BlackBerry. iSkin has introduced the Vibe series for the BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900, and Storm. Unfortunately no love for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 or Curve 8520 just yet. We’ve been checking out these cases for the past few weeks and so far we’re very impressed! They fit like a glove, and are designed to protect for sure. Included in the packaging is both the skin and a mirrored screen protector for maximum protection and privacy.

Review: OtterBox Impact Series Case for BlackBerry Tour 9630

otterbox-impact-screenshot

If you’ve ever looked at OtterBox cases in the past, you generally think of heavy duty and a little more bulky cases. Well today I’m showing you the Impact Case for the BlackBerry Tour 9600 series. OtterBox offers three different types of BlackBerry cases: Defender and Commuter Series, followed by the Impact series. Depending on how you’re looking to protect your phone the Impact skin does offer the most value for your dollar.

Think of the Impact Case as a tough and rugged version on RIM’s silicon skin. It features an all around wrap design with a bonus screen protector in box. Now unfortunately the Impact skin/case does not include a belt clip, and is a little too big to use in the stock case found in box. The Impact Case does however make a great pocket case.

Pros: More protection than more skins, great wrap around protection, extremely affordable!

Cons: No belt clip

Conclusion: My final thoughts on the OtterBox Impact Case is nothing but positive. I have switched from using a normal RIM “tough skin” to the Impact Skin by OtterBox, and have zero complaints. The overall fit is way better than any skin I’ve seen currently available for the Tour. I recommend you check out this case, if you’re looking for something to protect your device, without the huge added bulk of similar OtterBox products.

Where to Buy: Normally the OtterBox Impact Case for the Tour 9630 retails at $19.95 from OtterBox. Luckily the BBSync Store currently has them on sale for $17.95!

Rating: ★★★★★

BlackBerry Bluetooth Watch Coming Soon? Hoax? Maybe?

blackberry-watch

I’m not really one for watches but a rumor is floating around the internet. Apparently RIM may soon introduce a Bluetooth watch which would give alerts on new messages, phone calls and reminders from your BlackBerry. It may also supports stereo Bluetooth to play media from your device. RIM will not be the first to introduce a Bluetooth watch, Sony Ericsson introduced one a year or two ago, which was co-designed by Fossil. Anyway we will keep an eye out for official information from RIM, stay tuned.

UPDATE: Turns out this may just be a hoax. Last year there was rumors that the Sony Ericsson watch may be configured someday to work with BlackBerry.
