BBM Canada smacks RIM with Trademark Lawsuit for BBM name

It feels like RIM just can’t win these days. RIM just lost the court battle to use the trademark BBX for their next-generation platform, and now a Canadian company called BBM Canada is suing RIM for trademark infringement for the term BBM in Canada. According to RIM’s website they own the trademark to BBM in the United States (link) but that isn’t stopping BBM Canada from suing RIM. They will be taking RIM to court on January 11th, 2012. BBM Canada wants RIM and employees to stop using the term BBM, and pay up for damages to their brand for infringing their trademark.

Jim MacLeod, president and CEO of BBM Canada said “We want our name back… I find it kind of amazing that this wouldn’t have been thought about before they decided to use the name. The same thing goes for BBX.”

Nothing like kicking somebody when they’re down, eh?
