Wikitude v6.0 Brings Augmented Reality to the BlackBerry OS 7 As World Browser

August 19, 2011 | By | 7 Comments

When our friend Zack told us about Wikitude, I have to admit that while I saw the name, I never thought about it or read much about it. When I upgraded to the BlackBerry Bold 9930, Zack had me download it, and I have to share this with you!

Wikitude is by Wikitude GmbH. The description in the BlackBerry App World is as follows:

Wikitude World Browser allows you to discover your surroundings in a completely new way. By using the camera, simply hold up your smartphone and explore what’s around you in Augmented Reality (AR). See places, points of interests and even your BBM contacts through your camera’s field of vision – a truly engaging and immersive experience. Wikitude World Browser has been voted “Best Augmented Reality browser in both 2009 and 2010” !

Search through lots of exciting content and points of interest from Wikipedia, Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, Starbucks and thousands more. Use Wikitude to browse through what’s around you or to specifically search for places you are interested in. Craving sushi? Just type “sushi” into Wikitude’s search box, hold up your phone and see all the sushi restaurants around you. Looking for special offers near your home or nearest shopping centre? Simply view all the augmented reality mobile coupons to get up to 50% off ! You can even create your own places in augmented reality, for example your favourite bar, restaurant or meeting point. Go to and drop markers on a map to create your own place or hundreds of places. Hit the upload button and a few seconds later your personal places will be visible in the World on your mobile.

Wikitude holds the following features:

  • Find events, tweets, Wikipedia articles, ATMs, restaurants, user reviews and much more around you
  • Interact with your BBM contacts and discover new BBM users around you as you have never done before.
  • Experience places near you in augmented reality or show them on a map or list view
  • Browse more than 150 million places and interactive content from more than 1,000 content providers or so called “Worlds”
  • Explore and identify places and objects near by
  • Search for specific places, for example “thai restaurant”
  • Find mobile coupons and discounts for stores and shops near you

I downloaded and installed the app, and as it began to load up all the icons. I was then prompted to calibrate the compass. After calibrating, each icon showed a number on each. As you click on each icon, it opens the camera. You move in a circle, and it will show the little icons in the view and if you highlight each one, it will tell you the individual or group in the closest area. I was really surprised how easy it was to use.

Wikitude includes in Browse Worlds:

  • BlackBerry Messenger: Your BlackBerry Messenger friends around you
  • Wikipedia
  • Flickr
  • Foursquare
  • Youtube
  • Yelp
  • Meetup Events
  • Google Local
  • Qype
  • Mountain Peaks
  • Starbucks in US
  • Wind and Weather forecast
  • Hertz Car Rental
  • HD Shops
  • Walmart
  • Twitter
  • Yahoo Uprising
  • City Search
  • Repeater List
  • Gowalla Sports
  • Summits on the Air
  • Single Room
  • Wheelmap
  • GPSAlienAttack
  • Orange Dominicana Shops

In Settings you can set All your BBM address book contacts can see you or all Public, or even invisible. Upon setup it will also ask if you want to connect to BBM. You can also set the Unit of Length to Miles or Meters. Wikitude is the creation of Mobilizy GmbH and has been available for iTunes, but is now available for the BlackBerry.

It’s really a fun and interesting way to find new people, events, and venues nearby and just see who or what is near you. You really need to try this. You’ll love it. After all, seeing is believing, and what better way to see than through your own eyes.

You can download Wikitude v6.0 by Wikitude GmbH free from BlackBerry App World here
