When we first heard the name BlackBerry 7 it was rumored to be an operating system powered by QNX, similar to the Tablet OS found on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now it seems that RIM has decided to call their latest update BlackBerry 7. RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie confirmed it yesterday evening during their Investors conference call. The RIM co-CEO claims that this will be a huge update from BlackBerry 6, which is currently found on most newer BlackBerry smartphones, including the Torch 9800 and Bold 9780.
RIM is expected to unveil at least one new BlackBerry smartphone (the Bold Touch) with the new BlackBerry 7 update. Sadly it won’t have the power of QNX behind it just yet. It looks like we might have to wait for BlackBerry OS 8 or 9 before we will see a true QNX powered operating system for BlackBerry smartphones. Stay tuned next week at BlackBerry World 2011 for all the BlackBerry OS 7 news.
