Review: BlackBerry Protect v1.0.10.25

We were really excited to be able to be part of the beta program.  This should be one of the first things you download out of BlackBerry App World if you haven’t already. BlackBerry Protect is designed to give you that  extra protection by protecting your information on your device should it go missing. And here’s another incentive, it’s free! Check it out…

Before going on I’m going to state this: BlackBerry Protect IS NOT available if you have BES. That is because if you have BES, your IT admin has the ability to do what BlackBerry Protect does. Protect gives those who are on BIS to be able to do the same with our BlackBerry.

Downloading the BlackBerry Protect didn’t take long at all, compared to BBM. After installing you get the typical eula, then the front screen explaining what it does, then next you sign into your BlackBerry ID. This is the same ID you set up when you set up BlackBerry App World. Sign in, click next, decide how often and what to back up, let it do the first back up and you’re ready to roll.

What the BlackBerry Protect does. This is the description in the BlackBerry App World:

Can’t find your BlackBerry? Go to to

  • Locate it on a map
  • Set a password and lock it to protect your information
  • Wipe all the contents
  • Make your BlackBerry ring loudly to help find it
  • Display a message on the homescreen instructing whoever finds it on how to return it

Wireless Backup and Restore

  • Wirelessly back up  contacts, calendar, memos, tasks, browser bookmarks, and text messages
  • Automatically back up daily, weekly, or monthly
  • Wirelessly restore your backed up data when switching to a new BlackBerry

Save on data usage by:

  1. Only backing up information that has changed from the previous backup (incremental backups)
  2. Only backing up over WiFi-Preventing backup while roaming

When I started mine, I noticed it really didn’t slow my phone down, and testing it from the PC was pretty neat as well. Being able to track your phone, have it alert you, and be able to lock and wipe from a pc is a great relief. I know sometimes I forget where I place my BlackBerry at home, but again, log in and have it sound off so you can find it. You can also lock it with a red screen and have your text appear. Very nice.

In having tested a few different other security apps, I had some great apps to compare the BlackBerry Protect to. I’ve tried RoBlock, SMobile Security Shield, and the SmrtGuard. In setting it up, I’d compare it to SmrtGuard. Very easy and the app is self-explanitory. No extra steps, no complications, I was very impressed with it. As far as what it can do, it’s close to SmrtGuard. For being free and what BlackBerry has made available, this app is definitely a have to have. It’s accurate and it gives you the freedom to relax a bit more.

Cons: There’s really no cons but here are some of the things I’d like to see included. An Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware scanner (since there’s a few types of spyware that can be installed), a Spam blocker, a panic button, and a few more files such as email from the native email and perhaps 3rd party apps if possible.

Pros: It backs up even your browser bookmarks which is really nice. It’s accurate on the map. When I had tried SMobile’s, it placed me in Africa. As far as the ability to do what it does, lock and wipe is important especially when it’s stolen. And the ability to track it. Just knowing my info is backed up gives me that feeling of relief. My Tour would sometimes get errors where I had to reload and a few times I had forgotten to do a recent backup. So I can see Protect coming in handy for that reason as well.

Anyone can use this and it will be in your best benefit to download it and install it. Whether you are always losing your phone, worry about mishaps, or dread the day your BlackBerry may get stolen: this app is a must have.

For user friendly, it’s a top notch product. Easy to set up and looks clean and not confusing at all. For pc to phone it works great and I never had an issue with it. I recommend it to every BIS BlackBerry owner.

It would be very nice to use this app with the data plan (no BIS), hope this feature is added on a future release. Thanks
