It’s not that it’s a necessity for Anti-Virus at this point on a BlackBerry. But NetQin is more than just anti-virus. I’ve been using it since launch and wanted to share with our readers my impressions of it. So what is NetQin and what makes it an app you’d want?
NetQin was founded in 2005. They have antivirus available for the following devices: Symbian, Android, and now BlackBerry. I first heard about NetQin when I did a cross comparison of the SMobile Security Shield versus Lookout. A reader left a comment about NetQin, and I researched it, but since it wasn’t available for BlackBerry devices at that time, I didn’t have a chance to check it out first hand.
Besides being a security application for your BlackBerry, here’s another incentive. It’s free, and it has the following features;
Anti-Virus: Real time and on-demand scanning, using a local and cloud-based scanning engines to scan for virus, malware, and other apps that are malicious and the scan takes seconds.
Contacts Backup: Backup your contacts to your micro SD card or better yet, to their server which is cross-platform so if you go from an Android to a BlackBerry or vice versa, you can retrieve your contacts.
Anti-Lost: NetQin has several commands so that you can track your phone, send commands, remote wipe, and even sound off the alarm.
The app doesn’t take long to install, has no major impact on your battery. The anti-virus scan is fast and only takes seconds. Setting up the Anti-Lost is easy. You make a numbered password, and use the Anti-Lost wizard. It includes My location, Remote locate, Remote Delete, Remote Lock, Remote Alarm, and Anti-Lost Settings. You set another phone number for the phone to alert to if the SIM gets changed as well. Not bad at all for a free app. And for those of us who like to keep up on the latest information and mobile security threats, NetQin has an up to date security page here as well.
You can grab NetQin from the NetQin site, or from BlackBerry App World for free.
