RIM announces BlackBerry 6.1 Application Platform at DevCon Asia 2011

The BlackBerry Developers Conference in Asia is just starting to kick off. Tyler Lessard, VP of Global Alliances and Developer Relations for RIM had a pretty exciting announcement for developers today. Lessard announced that BlackBerry Application Platform 6.1 will be available to developers over the next quarter or so, and will include serveral great new features including:

  • Magnetometer / Digital compass APIs
  • Open GL-ES 2.0
  • Window API (overlay native app surfaces)
  • Event-based geo-fencing location APIs
  • Enhancement to barcode API’s for additional formats and custom decoding

The BlackBerry OS 6.1 is built off of the current BlackBerry OS 6.0 and just brings a couple new features for future BlackBerry smartphones. While this isn’t the QNX powered OS that many hope for, its a great step for RIM as they plan to introduce new a couple a new BlackBerry smartphones this year…
