The day I received my Bold 9700 I knew it needed protection. It was so shiny and had that beautiful chrome bar at the top of the phone. I knew the first time I drop it, I would be crushed. About a week after getting my Bold I received both the Commuter and Impact series cases from OtterBox. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve owned an OtterBox for every smartphone I’ve had, and I’m glad to have it protecting my Bold. Click on over to see the rest of this review…
OtterBox offers three styles of cases for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. It starts off with the Impact Series which is a durable, tougher silicon skin. It features a full body wrap around design, with a thicker material than the OEM BlackBerry “tough skins”. The Impact Series retails for around $19.95. The middle of the road (and my personal preference) is the Commuter Series. This cases features two layers of protector, a silicon skin, and a hard shell which wraps over top of it. The Commuter Series retails for $34.95. Last is the Defender Series, which is OtterBox’s highest end case available. This case provides maximum protection for today’s harsh environments. The Defender Series features three layers of protection, starting off with a plastic membrane to cover the body, keyboard, and display, then you cover your device with a polycarbonate shell, and then wrap it with a silicon skin to smooth over and plug any ports. The Defender series retails for $49.95. This review will cover the first two (more consumer oriented models, the Commuter and Impact series). Included in box with both the Commuter and Impact Series cases from OtterBox is a basic screen protector, so your display doesn’t get scratched. While these screen protectors aren’t the highest quality available on the market, they get the job done.
Included In Box:
With both the Commuter and Impact Series you get one case and a fitted screen protector. Unfortunately neither of these cases include any sort of holster or case to put on your side.
Ease of Use:
Both cases are extremely easy to install and remove. The screen protector is fairly basic as well. To install the screen protector, simply take the micro-fiber cloth and wipe the display off, then remove the film from side A and stick it down to the display. After sticking the screen protector down, use the squeegee tool to massage and bubbles out from underneath
- Impact Series feels much tougher than OEM skin
- Commuter Series brings great slim design, with great protection
- Both are priced decent
- Both series can fit in OEM BlackBerry case included in box with your Bold
- No color options available
- Screen protectors are not high quality
Where to Buy:
You can pick up both the Impact Series and Commuter Series from the BlackBerry Sync Store. Currently the Impact Series is listed at $19.95 and the Commuter Series is $34.95. If you are looking for the Defender Series they are $49.95. One thing to note as well shipping to most locations in the United States is only $5.95. Check out the links below for up to date prices, as they go on sale often:

- Commuter Series for BlackBerry Bold 9700
- Defender Series for BlackBerry Bold 9700
Overall I have no real complaints about either cases. Both fit very well, and provide great protection. If you had to ask me which case is for you, I would probably recommend the Commuter Series. What I love about the Commuter Series is its sort of a Hybrid case for say. It features both a silicon layer and a hard plastic shell. The prices are pretty decent running from $19.95 to $34.95 depending on which you want. If you are in harsh environments on a daily basis, or are extremely rough on your BlackBerry I would recommend you take a look at the Defender Series. Either way OtterBox has provided great protective cases (yet again) for your BlackBerry smartphone. if you have any questions about either the Impact or Commuter Series don’t be afraid to post them below and I’ll follow up.
