Congrats on the new BlackBerry, and welcome to the BlackBerry nation. I know with the holidays there are several new owners, and there’s some important advice I’m going to share that we take for granted and is many times overlooked. The importance of installing that disc that came with your phone, the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
That disc is crucial to your information, for syncing, backing it up, you name it. Especially if you need to upgrade it, or to resolve the infamous little reload software errors. But it’s the doorway for so much. So I thought I’d walk you through the importance of why you want to install that disc now.
The Media portion of your BlackBerry Desktop Manager is the  part that allows you to move your photos, music, movies, etc from the card or BlackBerry to the PC, or vice versa. It comes with Roxio software and is very easy to use.
The Application Loader is important because this is where some of your apps that you purchase in .alx and .cod formats that sometimes come zipped to the pc must be downloaded and installed to the phone through. Also, this is where if you are upgrading your OS through the pc, where you can pick and choose what you are keeping or deleting.
Backup and Restore is just that. It allows you to backup your BlackBerry, or to restore it as well. This is great should you need to wipe it, or you lose your contact book, or something to that effect. I try to backup my phone once a week, but the general rule is every other week or once a month. You just never know. This is the best way to back up emails, texts, contacts, etc, but not third party software.
Device Switch Wizard is the part where you can save third party software, or you can switch your devices…from the Curve to the Tour, or the Storm to Storm2, you can actually move your information from one to another and make it seamless.
Last is Synchronize. This is very important if you use Outlook or Yahoo. It really synchronizes well with either one. You can set up your contact book and your calendar this way. You need to go through each one, deciding if it’s a two-way sync, one-way sync, make sure any passwords are used, etc. But it’s a great way to keep your contacts synced as well as your calendar.
In the top right corner you’ll see Help, and if you click on it you can find Check for Updates. I recommend checking that every now and then to be sure your BlackBerry Desktop Manager stays current. It’s important, as a happy BlackBerry is an updated one, and when they update software you can be sure there’s a reason. And when using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager with your BlackBerry, all you need to do is plug your BlackBerry in with the USB cable and the Manager will find your phone after the drivers are installed. It will display the brand of BlackBerry and the pin in the lower left.
Why is this so important? Well, if you update online without the BDM, the Application Loader can wipe your phone as it may not back up your information. It’s one of the most reliable ways to keep backup copies of your phone just in case. And it’s the easiest way to move files and be sure they are in the best format. It’s also how your going to install the files that are not .jad. Think of this software as the portal to your information and maximum use of your phone.
I know with the holidays there are a lot of new BlackBerry owners out there, and this is part of our way of looking out for you. Remember that little disc is important, just as important as your phone. So while you are learning to use your new BlackBerry and reading your manual, please be sure you have installed or are installing that software so you can fully use your new phone.
If you have misplaced your disc, you can also download the BlackBerry Desktop Manager here, just choose whether you need it for a PC or Mac.
