The last time I reviewed Color ID, it was a few updates behind. And so much has happened since. I really like the Color ID, and it has become an integrated app of my BlackBerry. Not only has it updated, but there’s also a free version available as well, and we have a surprise.

Color ID is a fave app of mine, it’s a very important and integrated app on my BlackBerry. I use it for family, important friends and coworkers. Ever since the first day I tried it, I found it so useful in knowing who’s contacting me, being able to “triage” my emails, texts, and calls. Color ID is available in the BlackBerry Sync App Store for $5.99. This is a one time download price.

The description of the Color ID is as follows:

Know instantly who or where an email, sms or incoming call is from just from the colors of the flashing light on your Berry! Note: Your BlackBerry may require a battery pull after download.

Version 1.1.3 prevents the interruption of voice calls by disabling Color ID during a call. Upgrades from previous versions are free and encouraged.

Features are:

Assign custom LED colors to specific contacts for incoming text messages, email and phone calls!

Assign any one or two colors to the BlackBerry LED indicator

Select from 9 colors and combination of them: Orange, Pink, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Purple, Red, White or none

Multiple phone numbers and email address ability for one color combination

Syncs with BlackBerry address book for easy additions!

Easy-to-use interface with preview functionality

I installed the Color ID on my BlackBerry Tour 9630, and it installed effortlessly. I did the battery pull after installing and when it rebooted, I found the icon as the CID. Clicking on it brings up a very colorful introductory screen. After that it prompts you to add a contact. But here’s the even better and easier part of it. If you install Color ID, you can go to your contacts, choose one, click the options button, and you have a choice of: “Add to Color ID”. This makes it so much easier if you have email and phone numbers already in the contact info.

If the information is not in the contacts, then you can add manually through the app. Go to the Color ID icon, click the options button and choose “Add New”. You have the following options: Name; Email; Phone Numbers; Color 1; and Color 2. It’s so easy to choose your colors, you can add more than one email and phone number as well. Each color has an assortment to choose from: red; pink; orange; yellow; green; cyan; blue; purple; white; and off. The blinking colors can be of any combination you’d like.

You can add all your important contacts in here, and also those you’d like to avoid as well. So over all, the app is really an essential add to your contacts since you can change the ringtone, but not the led light for each one. This gives you not one, but two to add. I would like to see support with the messenger as well, or BlackBerry pins. That would really be a great addition to it, but as it stands, it’s very useful.

Customer service is great too, any issues are promptly answered and addressed. Over all, there’s nothing to find wrong or any fault. Now for the news about the free version. You can find the free version of the app on BlackBerry AppWorld. The free version of Color ID only allows customization of two contacts. This is a great way to decide what you think of the app, or if you only have a few important contacts you want to be alerted of. To add more contacts you must choose upgrade. You can read more about the free version of Color ID by Motek Americas, Inc here.

If you’re interested in the full version of Color ID, then look no further.

Thank you for the free download. I’m checking it out know. I will post a review soon.

After looking at the application, it does do exactly what it say. My one problem is that I wish I didn’t have to put each individual phone number in. If I had the option to add a contact from my Blackberry Address Book, this application would be a lot better integrated.

A special Thanks too Motek Mobile, Blackberry Sync, and Susan C. Thanks for a great app.

Fred, what you have to do is go into your address book, hilight the name you would like to add, hit the bb menu button and select add to color I’d.

    Thanks for the free download!

Thanks Josh! I took your advice and I did find the same suggestion in the CID help section. I mean there should be an option to add from address book in the actual application (but your suggestion also works). Also, it would be good to add the BBM PIN to the contact. I do use BBM a lot and would like to have CID sync to that.

I agree about the bbm. I wish they would sync that also.

Thank you for the free download. It was wonderful. It was so wonderful I downloaded it to my wife’s blackberry and it wasn’t so wonderful. In fact it made her blackberry freeze. If ColorID was invoked a battery pull was needed to bring the unit back. I ultimately had to uninstall it from hers.

Both blackberries are Verizon 8330 Curves running 4.3 OS. Mine has some minor corporate BES policies and I added three people and it works just dandy. My wife’s is a BIS only connection and I never could get ColorID to even get to the splash screen. It would just go to a blank screen and freeze the unit. Finally after a bunch of reboots I got the blackberry to stay up long enough to go to Options > Advanced > Applications and then removed it.

Ah well. I am thrilled to have the one copy and I guess I was being punished for being greedy.

  • Susan C

You’re welcome, and we thank Motek Mobile for making this possible. Bartok, please try upgrading your wife’s phone. The 8330 should be sporting 4.5 software, on BIS. Try that and see if it works.

    GREAT!

    Susan,

I can’t upgrade either unit because RIM broke something when they moved from 4.3 to 4.5 and didn’t fix it when I tested it in the 4.7 OS for the Storm.

Specifically, they broke the ability to use 3-wire headsets on units. By this I mean that if you are happily listening to music on a 3-wire headset and a call comes in then your voice:
    a) On OS 4.3, goes through the built-in microphone and you have a wonderful conversation. The mic just needs to be within about 2 – 2.5 ft away from your mouth

    b) On OS 4.5 and higher, goes nowhere because the internal mic is switched off and there’s no other mic to take over.

Normally this wouldn’t be a big issue; you go out and buy a new 4-wire headset, done. In our case that headset happens to be our cars with the blackberry sitting on the cupholder and I’m not about to buy two new cars just so they’ll work better with the blackberry.

So for now we’ll stay on 4.3 until RIM fixes this issue. I haven’t had the opportunity to test this on a Tour but if RIM fixes it then they have two new purchases coming their way. If they don’t fix it then we’ll hang on to our Curves with 4.3 till they fall apart.
