Lately I’ve noticed that there have been a few mentions of the Empower SMS Viewer, as well as it being on sale in the BlackBerry Sync Store, and it caught my curiousity. I had to know why this app is gaining popularity, and what it could do for me. I decided to download the app and find out for myself.

I purchased the app for my BlackBerry Tour 9630. The download is actually a two part process. You download the first part which takes you to another download. The first time you download you will see the error in the statement that says there’s an error with the activation code, don’t worry, it’s activated by the second part of the download. After it is all downloaded, you will see a light blue Ei which says Empower Central. This is where the SMS Viewer Options is.
You see the SMS Viewer on the top left. When you click it, you are given the following options: About, Header Options, Body Options, Template Options, Compose Options, and Advanced Options.
In Header Options you can decide the Header Background Type such as Pattern, Color, or Custom; Header Colour; Contact Picture Size; Font Name; Font Style; Font Size, and Header Font Color. Then at the bottom sits Save or Cancel. I had fun with this, allowing total personalization. At the bottom you can see a sample of what you chose.
In Body Options you have the following choices: Show Contact Name which you can check or uncheck; Body Background Tupe again; Body Color; Date Formats (I liked that you can decide what format the date is set at); Time Formats; Font Color and Font Name; Font Size; Font Smoothening; Font Style; Incoming Font Color; Outgoing Font Color; even a choice in Incoming Icon and Outgoing Icon. At the bottom is the sample of your choices and Save or Cancel.
In Compose Options you have your Reply Options: Font Name; Font Size; Font Style; Font Color; and Font Smoothening as well as Save and Cancel.
In Advanced Options you have to options to check: Enable Application and Send SMS on Enter. After you are done with the SMS Viewer, you can go to Recommend, and recommend SMS Viewer to your friends. Options is for your Preferred Connection, which is BIS in my case. Licensing has Update Licenses and of course your Registered Copy. If you click on Support you have four choices: Report A Bug; Suggest a Feature; Registration issues; and General Feedback.
Now out of the options, I was ready to try the app out. I went into my text app. If you go through your Contacts, you can click the options button, and scroll down and you will see Compose Rich SMS. This is the SMS Viewer option. Also, if someone texts you, it will come through as the SMS Viewer when you click on it. The conversation appears as a chat format chain style, a style I know many consumers prefer. If you choose reply you have three icons to the right side. The top one is Smilies, the second is Templates . There are seven quick templates: Please Call; Lets meet at; Luv u baby; I am in a meeting. Please call me later; I am on the way. Please wait for a second; I am busy right now; and I will be late. Â The third icon is Send.
I found the app pretty fun as in personalizing, the format that your texts come from one person, The choices you have, it’s really neat. It does do as it states, it’s about how you view your SMS, allows quick replies, has fun smilies, and web links are in fun colors. I have to admit, I really can see why so many consumers are taken with it. It’s easy to use, and useful in composing and replying.
For the ease of use it’s five stars, the choices and options to personalize it are five stars, and if you like having your texts in the chain style like it does, you’re going to love it. It’s a perfect compliment to your BlackBerry if you text, and you’ll wonder what you ever did without it. What I would like to see added: maybe additional fun themes like Twitter-like pattern, or holiday patterns for fun, but the app does well enough as is.
If you text, this is an app you don’t want to be without. I like it, even though I’m more into the email and messengers myself, it does tempt me to text more. So who will this app appeal to? Any texter definitely, anyone who is learning to text and would like some simplicity, and someone who would like more color to their phone. The app didn’t slow my phone down, and everyone who saw the app really liked it. Check out SMS the way it should be viewed with this app. There’s even a free trial to try it out if you aren’t sure if it’s right for you.
