BOLT Browser Brings Lightning Fast, Desktop-Style Web Surfing to All Types of Mobile Phones
New ultra-fast BOLT mobile browser now available for free in public beta

CAMBRIDGE, MA and BARCELONA, SPAIN — February 16, 2009 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) announced today the availability of BOLT™, the fastest mobile browser on the market today. BOLT provides a desktop-like view of the Internet on virtually any mobile phone, from basic phones to smartphones. Starting today, people everywhere can download the beta version of BOLT for free by visiting

Optimized to conserve battery life and data transmissions, BOLT features unrivaled speed – consistently 25 to 50 percent faster than competitors. BOLT offers ultra-fast downloads of streaming and flash video, high standards compliance, rich media and graphics enabling people to view websites just as they do on a PC. BOLT is the only mobile browser that lets people enjoy streaming videos on the average mobile phone from such popular video services as YouTube,,,,, and more.

According to the research firm comScore, more than 80 percent of iPhone users browse news and information on the mobile Web as compared to just about 10 percent of all mobile phone users. Up until BOLT, no mobile browser has been able to deliver truly desktop-like browsing for all mobile phones the way Safari does on the iPhone.

Nathalie Mateer, an early BOLT beta tester from Portland, Ore., says, “I find I’m using my phone to surf the web more now that I’m using BOLT. YouTube was not available on my phone before so I’ve really enjoyed being able to watch videos with the BOLT browser just as easily as I would from my home computer.”

Built with proprietary compression, navigation and rendering technologies, BOLT enables users to find and read information quickly and easily. Once users have navigated to the specific section of the large web page they are viewing, they can then zoom in to display clear text and images that look crisp on even small mobile phone screens.

“People are discovering that they don’t have to settle for the Internet browser that comes pre-loaded on their mobile phone and they are downloading alternative browsers in mass to take advantage of advanced features and improved user experience,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research and development for Bitstream. “People are simply making a choice for a better mobile browser and BOLT delivers unrivaled speed and the bells and whistles people want – from zooming and scroll capabilities to support for mobile video.”

Features of this BOLT public beta release include:

  • Fast, secure, desktop-style web browsing on both high-end and low-end handsets
  • Streaming video capabilities
  • Split screen and full screen modes for easy navigation and viewing
  • Easily add and select favorites and view browsing history
  • Intuitive keystroke shortcuts for easier navigation and content selection
  • Protection against spyware and malicious or faulty add-ons
  • Extends battery life and uses less data than competing browsers

Very buggy. With my Curve, using the trackball causing a severe delay in responsiveness. Not impressed so far.

I tried it on my Storm. Very Buggy, slow, non-responsive. It was like going backwards. I quickly deleted it from my device and went back to Normal.

I use BlackBerry Storm and I’m also a Bolt brower user.
Well, it went just fine at first.
    But then,… It’s a crap.
It takes more time than using BlackBerry default browser or Opera.
And it often stops loading the pages I download.
Btw, Bolt ver 1.50 is much better than the newest version 1.60.
I experienced lots of trouble using 1.60 ver.
