Do you have a BlackBerry Pearl containing software 4.2.0.54/4.2.0.64 or older? If so your Pearl may have a few minor problems that are fixable with a simple software upgrade from RIM. The new software version fixes the following issues:

  • Memory leak issue
  • Disappearing emails
  • Call logs that are being erased
  • Delay in answering phone call
  • Slow media access time
  • Slow reset time

For instructions on how to upgrade the software click read more.

Instructions to do upgrade:

  1. Download software update
  2. Run and install the newly downloaded program.
  3. Do not mark the option to open Desktop Manager when finalizing the install.
  4. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete Vendor.xml
  5. Connect BlackBerry to USB
  6. Open Desktop Manager

You should be prompted for the update at this point. (If not select Application Loader) and you’ll get the prompt for the update.

You may also want to do a backup for your BlackBerry before doing the upgrade. Updating your firmware will not debrand your phone – you will still have the phone’s original carrier logo on there. It also will not void your warranty, nor will void your contract with your service provider.

Ha!  What a joke!  This software upgrade did NOTHING to fix memory leak problem.  I have version 4.3.0.97 and the memory problems are AWFUL.  It’s ONLY 8100’s & 8800’s.  Not any of the other Blackberry models.  Why does RIM continue to sell a product that has a KNOW defect?  Seems very underhanded to me.  I did not know about this problem when I bought my phone last year and I have another year to go before my upgrade.  I take mine in to Verizon every time I go to the mall.  It’s always the same.  “They” are working on a patch.  Right. The solution is to take the battery out constantly to try to stay ahead of the leak?  Am I the only one that thinks that is a ridiculous thing to have to do, in order to get the device that I paid $300 for to work like it is SUPPOSED to?  How about a RECALL since you can’t fix it, RIM?
