Telus launches HTC P4000 with Microsoft Push

Looks like Telus is getting ready to take over the Canadian PDA market with the all new HTC P4000. The HTC P4000 launched today features Windows Mobile 5 Pro including Microsoft's push email technology, a 2 megapixel camera, microSD memory card slot, 2.8" high resolution touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO Rev. A and a great small compact design. Now don't get me wrong this really isn't anything to take on the BlackBerries professionalism.
We got our hands on the HTC P4000 early to test out and although its feature packed it's still no 8800. The HTC P4000 is available instore now for only $199 with the three year contract. Read more to see our gallery.

The first phone froze on me after less than a day. Brought it back and showed it to Telus who gave me another one. The second one shows signs of freezing. When using Bluetooth on the phone, the phone gets hung sometimes while in a call with no sound. Can’t even hang up when its in this state.
Great phone (when it works). Poor customer support on this PDA/phone.

had the phone for 4 hours before it frozeup and switched off. Won’t power back up and really is one expensive paperweight at the moment. Heres hoping this phone is just a dud…..

i have this phone and it is absolutely amazing..it took a little bit of time to get used to and figure out…but it is phenomenal…its feature rich and definitely worth it

Have this phone for over a week. Love it so far. Perfect from all point of view. Two little drawbacks are weak speaker (if you ever use phone with speaker) and horrible bluetooth (may be my luck. Same Plantronics bluetooth worked just fine with my Motorola v710 before. Everything else is perfect! Installed HiCalc, Haali Reader, MS Reader, Pocket SSH -all work as expected. Keyboard is easy to use. Scrollwheel is very convenient. Screen is large enough to read eBooks. Voice dialing works better than in Moto v710 etc.

Got phone from Telus in Yorkdale mall. After only 6 weeks, I can’t charge battery anymore and it went dead. Such a shame, because I really like all the features provided, but to have this break down so quickly with such normal use is very dissappointing
June 5th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
First, I must say this is an amazing little device when it was working. I own 3 generations of Compaq\Hp to compare with and this P4000 is a great device in most areas.
WiFi is extremely fast connecting and stable running. Transfer between screens and apps very fast thanks to processor.
256Mb Rom memory was a great choice, much better than the 64Mb volitile Ram of the past.
BLuetooth is questionable. Four different models of Motorola bluetooth heads sets tested all experiencing broken sound.
My device started locking up needing a soft reset. No biggy until the device hung in a continuous reset state.
When the device is reset it should display the white HTC screen displaying software versions at bottom screen, following by a vibrate,
followed by a Green background WIndows Mobile 5 screen, followed by Windows Mobile 5 desktop being displayed.
What mine now does is the white HTC screen without software versions listed at bottom screen,
followed by the vibrate then loops back to whtie HTC screen again. THis happens continuously until battery is removed.
I tried a cold restart to vendor defaults resulting in same continuous reset state.
Telus has ordered me a replacement unit.
to Matthew Gallagher on ringtones. take your favourite mp3’s or wma’s and save in \Windows\Rings
then use Settings -> Sounds & Notifications -> Notifications to select the tone for given event. Note: watch ringtone files sizes
here because saving to the \Windows\Rings folder uses available storage.

I got this phone from YorkDale and 3 days ago and I should say that I LOVE this phone. I read the other notes here and I should add that on first day when I got the phone, when I turend the phone off, I couldn’t power it back, so what I did, I just removed the battery and re-inserted that. everything is working fine now. I have not tried bluetooth, but I have a plan to use it to sync unit with my laptop. this phone is fantastic.

I have had this phone for about a week now, I love it! Have yet to have battery issues that everyone appears to be having! (great now that I have mentioned it…) All the features are what I need and more!

If you want MP3 ringtones you have to add the songs to the phone via your computer. Once thats done and you have located it on your phone from the file explorer just hold the stylus on the song you want to add as a ringtone look through the pop up menu. Have fun

b4 this phone I had the UTStarcom Pocket PC. Almost all the features and look are the same with few exceptions like the Adobe reader (Which I needed to read a ebook) internet connection is much faster, scroll wheel is a nice addition, the keyboard flips out smooth and buttons are more clear. I haven’t had any problems with my phone that others speak of. I would recommend this phone to anyone! Someone was asking where to get a 2gb card… Just go to Wal Mart and they have a Lexar 2gb card for about 50 bucks.

For a great bluetooth headset grab the Plantronic discovery 655. It has has gel knobs that fit in your ear comfortably with 3 sizes included. It has a nice sleek design and reception is amazing on both ends. its rather pricey 150.00 but it will be the last one u will ever buy!

I love this phone, but unfortunately it is stuck in the htc screen/buzz/repeat. I’ve it it just over a month. Maybe its just me, but it appeared to get slower every day even after restarting and turning off the phone. Now its the long weekend and I can’t even send it in until Tuesday

September 14th, 2007 at 3:47 am
This phone has worked well for me for the most part. It does freeze once in a while, gotta remove the battery and start back up, tends to be a microsoft thing I have just had to get used to. The annoying thing with the phone is the number of times the phone does not ring when it is in the sleep mode. There are 4 people at our office that are all on their 3rd try with this phone. Telus has said they do not guarantee reception indoors? That really pissed us off. Total monthly billing between the 5 of us is around $2000.00 it kind of sucks that thats the service that we have to put up with. I am pleased with the fact that I don’t have to take a phone, a camera, and my palm pilot with me everywhere I go.

Do not buy the htc P4000. It will only cause you hassle.
I’m on my 4th replacement now and I’m getting rather tired of receiving refurbished replacement phones that have the same or different problems.
Here are some of the issues I’ve had with this expensive paperweight:
1. Freezing
2. The phone randomly not ringing. I realized this after getting into several arguments with people who were not able to get ahold of me at important times. It caused much stress, believe me. I then realized that the htc, and not my ears, was to blame. If this hasn’t happened to you yet, it will, just wait. You won’t receive calls whenever the device goes into power saving mode and the screen turns off. As a temporary fix, I turned off the power saving option, but that results in very short battery life.
3. The screen will be very pixelated sometimes. It looks really bad, so much so that taking pictures is pointless. In order to get rid of this problem, the only solution I found was to turn the phone off and on again. However, you will typically have to do this several times before the screen will look normal again. But beware, the next time you turn your phone on, it may just be pixelated again!
4. The phone ringing for a few seconds after I turn it on, with the message that “so-and-so” is calling. However, when I answer it, no one is there. Then it says “missed call”. Turns out this person called earlier, but because the phone doesn’t ring half the time, I missed it.
5. The newest problem is a very faint ring when people call. I’ve got the volume turned up to the max and I can barely hear it. Guess I’ll have to switch it to vibrate until the vibrate function stops working or I return to my local telus store to replace this piece of crap once again.
I’m going to call the loyalty number to attempt to receive a different phone to replace this one at no cost, or to get some sort of compensation. I’m anticipating that they will do little for me. I’m really sick of this garbage. Don’t buy this phone. You’ve been warned.
September 20th, 2007 at 2:07 am
I completely agree with Jennifer, dont buy this phone, I had the exact same problems… However I did recieve excellent support from Telus and recieved a new replacement phone free of charge. Full points for Telus… major Minus-Points for the HTC4000.

I was very close to buying the HTC 4000 but when i read these comments i started to question that. It seems that some people are saying its good but some people say its bad. I think ill go with another phone. I live in Canada so i can’t get an iphone but i would like a phone with good web browsing, wifi accesable, a camera, good phone quality and very simple to use. Please help!!!
Thanks, Mike

I just got one of these phones last week. I played with it all weekend and my only complaint is the battery life. This morning I set up my voicemail which took 5 minutes or so. I checked my battery life at that point and was down to 70%. Is that a similar issue to what some of the other battery problems are? I will try it this week and see how it goes before I call Telus for answers. I had a Treo and a Blackberry before this, both of which had great battery life. I hope this is just a bad battery!
October 5th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
HTC P4000 is GARBAGE!!!!! I’m on my 3rd brand new device in a couple of months, all the problems mentioned are ones that I had! Do not buy this phone! It’s defective and all of them need to be recalled! If enough of us complain, maybe Telus will actually do something! I’m tired of replacement phones, I demand a new device!!!

It’s good to know that I’m not the only one with these ongoing problems with the terribly buggy HTC P4000. I miss a dozen calls a day, either because the phone is in sleep mode or because of unbelievably bad indoor reception. It constantly locks up in sleep mode and has to be reset to come back to life. Has anyone had Telus replace their P4000 with a different phone or do they just give you a new P4000?
November 12th, 2007 at 10:37 am
To prevent freezing - download a pocket pc app (such as SPB Pocket Plus) that actually closes the apps when you leave them - the freezing is a result of windows ‘hiding’ the apps when you navigate and not switching them off (you have to go into memory settings and close all as suggested above), I have no idea why windows hasn’t fixed this for WM6.0 (its not the device fault, its a windows fault) its been an issue with PDAs running windows for years.
Mine suffers from not receiving calls as seen above, the phone will go into power-down state, it will then miss incoming calls and start ringing when I switch it on (not really calling) - the only fix I have found is to re-boot the phone then the problem goes away for a while. It will also sometimes freeze in the power-down state requiring a re-boot (usually at the most inconvenient time like driving)
The worst bug is the failure to charge when plugged into the charger - many times I have plugged the low-battery phone in at night only to have it die because it isn’t charging at all, the only fix I have for this is to make sure the phone is ‘on’ or ‘off’ when plugged in and not in the power-down state. Really really annoying!
If I find any fixes Ill post

Hey guys,
I have had this phone since it came out and have had no problems!!!! I have been customizing it like crazy and everytime I change something it is a different experience!!! I LOVE THIS PHONE!!
November 15th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Hi,
I’m looking into taking over a contract from someone here in Guelph and i was just wondering if anyone here is from Guelph and/or knows about Telus’ Guelph coverage?
Also, how is the reception in Toronto? I’d assume pretty good?
I noticed that most people complaining about freezing were from May, is this because its less common (fixed) now or because those people just gave up?
November 15th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
Another question, to those of you who got the 3rd party “close program” apps, do you notice any freezing at all?
November 16th, 2007 at 1:49 am
I’ve had this phone for 4 months now and here’s what I’ve experienced.
Oddities:
1. Freezing (while a bit annoying, it’s not that bad an easily fixed by reseting the phone).
a. Perhaps 1 out of 50 calls (just a rough number) it’ll freeze.
b. After a couple of weeks of usage, the phone may freeze.
2. “Elevator” reception is sketchy (but sometimes I get reception).
3. Poor application management by Windows Mobile 5 (but easily fixed with a 3rd party application). Apps don’t “stop” when you “close” the app.
4. Ring count isn’t adjustable and I find 3 rings to be a tad short.
5. Noticed that the keyboard on the bottom edge is slightly detached (but at first glance you can barely tell there’s a “cosmetic” defect). Apart from how it looks it’s hasn’t affected any keyboard or other functions.
6. If you’re with Telus, although the P4000 is GPS capable you’ll find it’s been disabled.
Joys:
1. Nearly fully customizable. Since I’ve had the phone I’ve installed numerous applications and games. At the moment I have the following installed:
a. Pocket Artist v3 - A photoshop wannabe program.
b. Pocket Google (amazing to be able to get satellite images on the cell phone… Jack Bauer could use one of these.
c. Pocket Dictionary - A Romanji to “Japanese” dictionary (found at http://www.ookii.org/software/pocketdictionary/)
d. Audionotes, which apart from recording voice memos also allows you to record phone conversations.
e. SPB Products that help manage my phone a little better and take care of the application management issue (so when you close an app, it’s no longer running) plus other great organizational features.
f. pBop - simple gives the PDA nearly full Ipod functionality.
g. Pocket Mechanic
h. Atomic Tanks (a scorched earth wannabe), Scrabble, Sudoku, and other really great games for a device such as this.
2. Fast and reliable EVDO and WiFi.
3. As mentioned, one device does pretty much everything (phone, 2MP Camera, PDA functionality w/ internet connectivity).
4. Supports up to 4 GB (not as good as say an Iphone but meh, 4GB is more than sufficient for myself).
5. Convert/shrink movies on your PC and load them onto your P4000.
General Impression:
All in all, I love this phone and give it a solid B+ if not an A, but in comparison to what…?
Really, you need to give this phone a try… for all those people that got “duds”, I’m sympathetic but hopefully you’ll be able to work past the issues and get to enjoy this really “neat” device.
November 19th, 2007 at 3:52 am
Have had this phone for about 5 months now. Nothing but trouble. Have replaced the battery twice..freezes up all the time. Actually have to take the battery out and reboot. Alarms don’t go off half the time…having trouble getting the phone to even ring when I have an incoming call! Turn the side button on and will have missed calls and text messages from hours before, and the phone was sitting beside me the whole time. Recently the media player stopped playing sound.
Very unsatisfied customer. Wouldn’t recommend this phone to anyone! To much hassle for to much money.
November 20th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
I’ve had this phone for just over 2 months now and there are some pros and cons. Mainly I love the WiFi feature and if you love text messaging this phone is for you. But, if you like to talk on the phone this phone rather sucks. People always have trouble hearing me and I sometimes have trouble hearing them. The mic portion you speak into should be made higher quality as well as the ear speaker. So, if all you do is txt, use the WiFi and surf this phone rocks. But, for using it as a cell phone… Well I’d rather spend the money on a better phone.
November 26th, 2007 at 1:59 am
Had this phone for 12 hrs, and I am already having problems. The touch screen is not really working properly, for example, I try clicking on start but i wont be able to click on the programs. and when I try to dial on the touch screen it doesnt work, I’ll be clicking on 1 it will click 3 or other #s, that is only if it works…LOL
I think I am getting an other phone tomorrow….very disappointed….LOL

just got the phone 1 week. I searched and can’t figure it out if i can assigne different ringtones to different contacts as i used to do it with chocolate(sucked)

excellent phone. I looked for a year for a phone that had all these features like voice recordings, write a note on your screen, microsoft apps, email, internet, camera, records video, music, bluetooth, etc. Wifi feature is great because you can get on the internet with no fee, whereas if you go thru telus you will pay. It has locked up once or twice in 8 months. Just take out battery and put back in. I would definitely recommend this phone.

I’ve buy my p4 from telus about 3 month ago and the only thing that I got is just nothing. im not able to see video on youtube because the flash player isn’t avalable for this phone. after that I need to make several reset all week long because when im using my bluetooth sometime my phone just freze. also the z touch on my keyboard isn’t working I’ve get the phone back to te saler andhe just tell me that isn’t his problem and just to call telus but on my contrat there is a 30 day back garantie ……..also to if im my msn pocket and my phone freee after that the only way to get back online on my msn is to make a complete reset, like I did almost 4-5 time a week.
after 2.5 month of speeking with another to another telus people they finish to accept giving me a new phone but last week when I went to another saler to get my new phone lolllllllll the one they send me wasn’t in a better shape than the mine. it wasn’t working at all . ….. and now telus is telling me that isn’t his problem if the phone doesn’t work good. its like if you buy a car and when you goes to get it your new car doesn’t start and your car resaler who’s at your side at this time tell you that this is not his problem because he’s only the resaler not the manufacturers and ask you to go home and call the manufacurers who’s (htc in my case) if you want to get a working machine
if somebody have experience the same trouble with telus and the p4000 just rewrite me please
thank

I bought HTC P4000 phone in November 2007…bad mistake. I should have just purchased a Blackberry but I thougth the wifi was a good feature. The HTC P4000 that I purchased had serious battery and OS issues. The email setup was very hard ,and until it broke, I did not get it setup. Very user unfriendly phone. Literally impossible to get support from Telus through the support line and at the store. Since January this phone will not power up. I have given up on it last week and is now using a Blackberry with Rogers. I’ve learn my lesson not to do business with Telus and the HTC P4000 is junk.

if i dl the upgrade will I lose all the games I downloaded too??
June 24th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I’ve had mine for a month. I just love it…I haven’t experienced any of your issues (dead batteries, freeze ups, lock ups, etc…)I’ve tested numerous bluetooth headsets including Altec Lansing’s T515: they all worked fine…The Wifi is amazing:I’m actually posting from my P4000. With all that free wifi all over, and running on a 60 Mb a month budget: you shut off the phone and surf and email the wifi away…This baby’s great
July 8th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
This phone is awesome. You can play all sorts of games on it. download ringtones or just install them and use them. Bluetooth is great. Watch movies and even upgrade the entire programing of the htc p4000 to do whatever you wish. There are loads of programs on the net that allow you to tweak your phone and the progs are free too. One site That i have found a crap load of programs for but they cost a small amount is clickgamer.com .
There is also many places on the net that you can find FREE upgrades to the entire phone like changing the processor speed to run faster, anti virus programs. This phone is NUTTS!!!! However I have a small problem and it is regarding the WIFI. I cant seem to find any access points. Meaning that when I am scanning nothing pops up. I have even tried to connect to the home router but is does not pop up on my access points on the phone. does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem or is there something that perhaps I am overlooking. Thanks all help would be great.

Does anyone know where the contacts files are saved? I want to back them up without autosync
